I am feeling sad that Sunday seems to be disappearing as a day for God, family and rest. In the area where we live, Sunday is not really any different - everyone seems to have sports, music etc (including Catholic schools) For many Mass is not a family activity - families go to various Masses on Saturday night and Sunday.
As a family we have always held to the importance of Sunday for God, each Sunday as Easter. Everyone goes to Mass together and it is the high point of our week. We spend a lot of time together, eat good food, play games etc. We also try to invite people for brunch or lunch.
But as our kids grow it seems to be harder. Our kids have definitely lost out by not doing sports on a Sunday (except for 2 tournaments a year) - all the best leagues seem to play on Sundays. We receive A LOT of criticism for not having our kids join Sunday leagues. My kids (so far) have totally not wanted to fill up their Sundays with activity...
The same for jobs - just recently my twins were so pleased to be offered jobs that were perfect for them (summer jobs staring on Memorial Day) They indicated on the application that they could work Monday to Saturday for as many hours as needed. However during interviews - they were told that the training is Easter weekend - Saturday and Easter Sunday from 9 to 7!!!! The hiring person seemed to indicate that they were looking for "diversity"
I feel so sad. Maybe it is showing my age, but I remember growing up when no stores or restaurants (except for the local pub) were open on Sundays. I think everyone had stronger families and definitely we were healthier for taking a day to rest.
When I lived in France, everything was closed on Sundays and even families who were not particularly religious rested and spent time together.
I would love to hear how you keep Sundays special...

Diversity, my foot, that is discrimination! If everyone else is willing to work on Sunday, then your twins are the diversity! Where is the company's tolerance for diverse beliefs, practices and people? Good grief, can you tell I am mad

I was just feeling this yesterday.
We have struggled with the sports on Sunday. We do play on Sunday. But we always say to every coach that Mass is the priority first. If we can work around it we will, but if not we will not be there. It has proved to be a witness to the various teams we have been on over time. Also for our family the sports outing is usually a family event and somewhere where we are all happy at..so we have worked around it.
But, I do wish that we could have that guarded time without having to work so hard at it or give up good thinks besides that Sunday time frame.
I have no idea how the families that aren't homeschooling do some of it. Sometimes I feel like we have Monday as our Day of rest here because of a busy weekend. I couldn't imagine, after some of our sports weekends, getting everyone ready for school and out the door at 7 in the morning.
Anyways, I have nothing helpful to add, but I am longing for quiet, Holy Sundays too!!!

I hear you Betsy and we don't do Sundays just Saturdays. I know the couple of times a year we do all star tournaments on a Sunday - we enjoy it, but everyone is exhausted and cranky on Mondays. Even my one extremely talented child who lives to play soccer does not enjoy Sundays - he prefers having a family day with some relaxation.

Just wanted to let you know that this afternoon my boys received another similar job offer from a different place. This manager was a lot nicer - no Easter Sunday training, and he told them that they would be able to work around the Sunday thing, and also that although the training is on a Sunday in May, they arrange it for 2pm so that people can go to church first. This gives me hope that America is not throwing in the towel on Sundays.....

We guard our Sundays. Liturgy as a family and then we spend the afternoon together. Sometimes dh has to do some work, but he is here with us.
My girls take music lessons from as Orthodox Jewish couple and the wife has expressed to me a couple times how surprised she is that most Christians just see Sunday as any other day

I think that we could learn a thing or two from the Evangelicals. My Evangelical friends spend all morning in church, have fellowship lunches and then go back to church in the evening!!!
I feel so strongly about this - not as a judgement of those who choose to do sports etc on Sunday. More as a case that I feel that we are not getting that Sunday is EASTER - that it should be the summit of our week, that we should be celebrating as a family. Mass should not be something just squeezed in between commitments. And also because it seems our society is stressed out - and I feel that if a family cannot even spend Sunday together, what hope is there. I need Sunday for my faith, my marriage, my family, my health etc.
I LOVE Sunday - it is my favorite day of the week, and I really miss my kids when they are not home on Sundays.
And on that note, I have to sign off the internet now as my college dd is having to come home - she caught a nasty campus virus.

We have lived in Europe twice since we were married and my favorite, favorite memories of Sundays are the sounds of church bells calling the faithful to Mass.
At first I found it frustrating that most stores were closed (except florists, so families could take flowers to family gravesites), but once I learned to plan ahead, it was so nice to have quiet time that really could only be used for going to church and being with family. Italians really cherish their family relationships and their society is truly structured around family.
Here in the USA, it's not so easy - we do have some Irish dance events on Sundays - but we try very hard to set aside relaxing family time and share a nice meal. I'm grateful that the friends our son is rooming with do this, too.

Marilyn, I feel like you do and we guard our Sundays as much as possible. I hate to see shopping center parking lots full on Sundays. It has become just another day of the week for most people.
We have chosen not to sign up for sports where the games are played on Sundays (Fall baseball or Spring soccer for instance), but will play when the regular seasons where games are played on Saturdays or during the week go into play-offs or someone makes All-Stars. It is a compromise, but it turns out to only be a few Sundays each year. We spend quite a bit of time at Mass and visiting afterward and then together at home for the rest of the day. Maybe we'll go for a walk or a bike ride. We normally watch a movie together in the evening. I love it! I think it is definitely something worth guarding.
