Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Big wave to all who are reading! Hope your 2014 is off to a wonderful start!

The good news is that today is Wednesday and I'm actually posting the Wednesday Shout Out on Wednesday.        The bad news is I'm heading to a doctor's appointment soon. The good news is that it's just and annual exam. But I still don't have to like it, right?

So speaking of doctors, how do you choose yours?

My current doc is a family practitioner DO who is in practice with her husband. She is great! Sweet! Kind! Has to little boys so we talk about mothering. BUT her front office person is AWFUL to the point that my husband (who sees the male doc) and a woman friend of mine (who sees my doc) are looking to leave the practice. UGH!

I have some new stuff up on my blog. And I'm looking into changing it up a bit. Any suggestions are welcome!

My scoopit pages have some really articles, many are "New Year Optimism" types

If I don't get back here to chat, be assured that I always read and am praying for you and your intentions

Love,

Before you leave because of the office personnel. Make sure your doctors know that it's so bad you're ready to leave just to not have to deal with them. It won't change if you don't point it out. The doctors may not even know how bad it is.

At our Dentist office, in an emergency (needed to get meds started, not doing actual work on the teeth) we saw one of the other dentists there. And I left too mad to say anything, but the next time I went in, I spoke to the front office and let them know that under no circumstances would anyone in my family ever EVER be seen by that person again. It wasn't much longer before that person was gone.

You are right, Jodie! My husband has been PAINFULLY CLEAR about this problem. So has my friend, sigh.

I honestly wonder if this office manager is stuck with the "bad guy" roll...forcing extra appointments... not willing to mail results... etc... as part of her job to gain more income for the doctors. Her whole personality is harsh, nasty school principal like . I just don't think the doctors will let her go, for money and personal reasons too. She's been there since the start of the practice and I think the docs are too nice to let her go.

Love,

The office personnel is such a big problem with some of my doctors, too. I find it makes or breaks the experience.

I feel for your appointment, Angie. I have to admit, i will probably dread check ups for now on. It was at my female annual that my doctor detected my heart problem. Open heart surgery and root canal later....what else can they find?????

I am praying that they find nothing else with you, Jenn! Enough!

I'm back and guess what? The unpleasant office manager had her eyes glued to a computer when I walked in. No one else was there. I waited. Nothing for a few minutes. Then Jennifer, a young sweet girl who has taken my blood pressure and weighed me for the past few years came around a corner and greeted me. Looks like she is moving to a reception position, which would be GREAT!

Love,

I've spent the week picking up my habits! You know, like homeschooling, eating properly, exercising, tidying around the house, getting up at an earlier hour, catching up with my friends and family who live further away .... Rather cliched for the first part of January, but I look forward to renewing my systems at the beginning of the new year. I will take any motivational energy I can get.

My older boys went back to Oregon so we are a quieter house this week.   Only 5 of us here at home.

We got 2 cords of firewood delivered to our house this week, so the big project was stacking it all on the front and side porch.    We keep our central heat turned down to 59 so the fireplace/wood stove becomes a central gathering place because it is warm there. Firewood has gone up in price but it's still more economical than propane which is the default fuel for our heating system.

Speaking of doctors... we went in and got our flu shots today .
We have skipped these for several years, but this year the flu is rampaging through our town. We have regular flu and H1N1, which sent one of ds's friends to the pediatric ICU.

Evidently the flu here this year is very nasty and aggressive. Even those who have ben vaccinated are getting it, but the course is much less severe and only half as long. Since we were already sick with Mr. Unpleasant VIrus over Christmas, and I don't want to repeat that, we rolled up our sleeves today.

Most people I have talked to either have had the flu this year or know someone who has, so that was also very motivating.

Willa - exactly!

Melinda - I know you are thorough and cautious about such decisions. Do you feel that the flu shot "hit the mark" this year?

So far, so good here in AZ. We tend to get the flu later than everyone else.

Thanks!

Love,

Angie-

I was warned by a doctor I trust about a month ago that the flu was already bad and getting worse in town. He said that it is predicted to worsen right into February here, which is predicted to be the worst month. In the past couple of weeks I have run into several people who have all had a flu experience. Yesterday I met another friend who had just gotten over it.

I just had a strong feeling on top of all this that we should get flu shots. When I called the dr this morning to set up an appt time, I got an appt within the hour! (That never happens). And when I got there I asked if my kids could have their shots, too, (vs. waiting another week for their appt at the pediatrician) and the office said sure. It was all done so quickly I felt sure it was the right thing.

Oh my.....do I have a little experience with choosing doctors!

I really research where the doc has gone to school, their residency, their fellowships....and if they did all of their study and residency right here in our moderately small city, I’m much less likely to see them. I want someone who has a lot of experience outside of this town. I’m more of a “med-center” teaching hospital kind of girl. I know that drives others crazy, and those institutions are not perfect, but given we have lots of medical issues here, I feel more comfortable that someone has my back vs feeling like the Lone Ranger....which is often how it is locally. I drive close to 3 hrs or more for the kids’ specialist. For my own docs, I have had some real doozies since we have moved here...not a good thing. I am almost in a good place with internal med, gyn, and dentist with my own care after almost seven years here.

I've seen stuff about how bad the flu is this year. But it seems like it's just so bad that even those with the shot get pretty sick rather than the shot being a "miss".

At least that's my impression around here.

And that reminds me. I should get up to the health food store before closing today and get more elderberry in the house (though I think I have some dried that I can make tea with).
