I know I am a wimp when it comes to cold weather. 20 years ago, I was in Indiana for the last polar vortex and the temps hit -20F. I flew home with #1 Son and it was -4F at Washington National Airport when we arrived.
It is not going to get that cold tonight (I hope), but we are supposed to see temperatures around 7F.
What about you?
(And if you're worried about the cold, please let us know so we can pray for you! I have extreme weather anxiety at this time of year...and in the summer...and autumn... )

9F here right now. Took a pic of the thermometer for my kids who are excited about single and below zero digits. Mom not so excited Weather anxiety here too. Have put soup in the slow cooker overnight, am doing laundry and running the dishwasher - the wind is awful and I am scared of losing power.

So this is not where I tell you how hot it has been here?? So I'm not telling you we've had a heat wave and it was 40C (104F) two days ago.
Whilst we moan about the heat I'd imagine it's nothing compared to worrying about power and lose of heat.

I think my children would disagree, Erin; they both prefer cold weather to hot (Son: "You can only take off so many layers of clothing."). (And here, hot weather usually brings thunderstorms and the associated risks of power outages.)
Burst pipes are our big worry; we've only had that happen once before, but this is the worst freeze we've had in 20 years.

Granted, it's very early in the morning, but we are at -8 with a windchill of -26. I'm thankful for our furnace and fireplace, and even though we have frost on the inside of our windows, for our cozy home. I can't help but think of those who are homeless at these times. Or even those with homes but no heat. How did the pioneers survive when temps got this low?

It is 19F here this morning... yesterday at the same time when I took my walk it was 68F, humid, drizzly and very windy. I came home feeling windblown and sweaty.
This morning I may have to skip my walk... 19 is a bit low even for me! It's been crazy this winter how the temps have gone up and down. One night we need summer PJs so we're not too hot to sleep, the next day we are looking for mittens and scarves. Or we go into a store without coats and come out an hour later and freeze. So strange....

Today, it is -15 with a windchill of -21, which means it is warmer than yesterday morning at this time, when it was -26 with a windchill of -35.

I haven't left home in 4 days. My car is covered in a huge pile of snow so if we do venture out tomorrow I think we will take the bus.
Funny to think that it's actually warming up here and it's still minus 9.
Some of our windows have begun to accumulate ice on the inside. Never seen that before.
I've had DD in bed with us the last few days. I was concerned about her by herself, with two exposed windows in her room, if the heat went out.
But we've been plenty warm at home and I'm very grateful that we've got a warm, heated home and that we've had no reason to leave it.

Schools in the area have been called off for two days now because of the cold. Today is actually not bad as the wind has stopped. Yesterday was bitter. The lowest we saw was -14, but the winds that night were awful so wind chills were well below that. We had water freezing in pipes, but got them thawed out without breakage, praise God!
It is supposed to be 40 this weekend, so we will be back to sloppy roads. I think I prefer it stay cold enough to keep the snow, but not so cold that it is unpleasant to go outside.

Had to be out at 7am today for dd's dental. Thermometer registered 2F. We layered seriously. It did not feel that bad. Helps that it is really bright and sunny. Power still out - thanks for the prayers.

It's warmed up, here. At 12 noon, it is now -5F with a windchill of -28F. When I checked around 8am, it was -16F with windchill of -39F. I am praying my college students keep warm dashing between classes and that they and my oldest, who is now in working world commuting down I-75 60 miles to Toledo, all make it home safely and without incident. The roads are absolutely atrocious!

You are not a wimp! My bff/sister lives in Clearwater, and when temps get "down" to 60 or lower, she pulls out her longjohns!
I was talking to my boys about that terribly cold spell when the oldest were little guys. I think our home thermometer went to -24F, but it was so cold and windy, I only opened the door for a sec that one time, and never checked it again. Plus, when I tried to snap a pic, my camera iced up!
We so very much appreciate any prayers! Thank you!!!

We had minus 13 when I woke up this morning.
I have been struggling to defrost some pipes. One bathroom sink and our kitchen sink. I turned off the water so we have no water(but do have electricity-yeah!!!) Prayers for a quick defrost and no busted pipes would be appreciated.

Well before Christmas we broke the all time record with a -30 actual temp. We tend to have little to no wind at those temps though. It's been unseasonably warm since though. Sure temps still drop to freezing at night but we've had day after day of 40* temps.. bizarre. And while it's nice.. we also have had NO snow since the beginning of December, and that's going to be awful this summer if we don't get more snow pack.
And speaking of snow, we actually have warmer night temps and colder day temps today and the next few days with a possibility of snow.. so we're rooting for the snow here.

It was -2 overnight on Sunday with high of 9. It has been warming up here since and today should be 50. We are on the outer fringes of this arctic freeze zone. Like Jodie our big subzero spell hit in early December - covered the northwest, north central and mountain region so didn't get so much publicity. We had a week below zero then, lowest -20s with windchill. The boiler at the church where we have out co-op broke that day and we improvised with space heaters. It really does make one appreciate the fact that we have heat. I always wanted to be a pioneer when I was little - thinking now about it can't even imagine - think The Long Winter.

While I was looking for info on weather history for us I found this neat site. You can look at the year's past weather in your area in lots of graphical forms.
WeatherSpark.com
Really interesting to see the extremes and averages laid out this way. Here is our past year - if you just put your location into the search box it will pull up the data for you (or someplace near you).

That's funny that you mention that.. when we got those really low temps here.. probably about -20 and lower (we tend to get a period with temps down in the -teens every year) I started feeling like the cold was wrapping around the house and squeezing to get in... and then I remembered how in The Long Winter it was described in a similiar way to an animal trying to get into the house. Our house is well insulated but that cold and the heat was just being sucked out of the house.
