My daughter and one of my older sons are very in to the Sherlock series. I haven't watched it myself.

Oh yeah, we like Sherlock! I love the twists that make it modern without losing the essence of how it was written.
I also find it funny that Martin Freeman (Watson) is Bilbo Baggins in the Hobbit and Benedict Cumberbach (Sherlock) is the voice of the Dragon and Necromancer.

My teen children are obsessed. I enjoyed the first season and then lost interest, but will try again. It is a little scary to me maybe because of the modern-ness of it. :)
My daughters just walked in and said there is some immodesty in the first episode of the second season. They said, 'totally unnecessary'.

Yes, this. The only thing is I'm reading the books/stories AFTER the episodes because I don't know which ones they're using.

Yeah. And in the third season there are nods to Internet fandoms that make some scenes awkward.

Huge fans here! I rarely enjoy modernizing of my beloved classics, but I like what they have done with Sherlock. The casting is brilliant.
Stef, I do the same, rereading the original after watching the episode.
I cannot wait for the third season to begin, and hope it does not disappoint!

Agree. My kids (and I) think this is just the coolest thing ever.
I do hope they don't end the series with Season 3, as I read somewhere that the basis for Eppy 3 will be "The Last Bow". But I also read somewhere else that it will be another cliffhanger just like Reichenbach Fall.

An interesting article on Sherlock's boredom and the spiritual restlessness it indicates ...

We are fans, Stef! I am surprised that I like it, because I was very disappointed in the "new" Father Brown.
It's definitely not for younger kids, but is prompting some great discussions here.
We like Poirot, too. My dd has read most of Doyle's works and a bit of the Poirot books, and lets us know when the tv plotline diverges from the books. Fun!

Heather, that was a wonderful article. Thank you for sharing it! I love the St. Augustine quote.
More to share with the kids!

That was a great article. We are huge Sherlock fans here. My oldest even leaves youth group a bit early so he can be here in time. Of course, if he didn't he'd be walking home!

Just watched my first episode (I have been on a Dr. Who kick recently), and love it! Cumberbach is also Kahn in Start Trek Into Darkness, which I too enjoyed.

The first episode had dh and I laughing out loud throughout. We love the one-liners and how well Holmes and Watson play off one another, and it is so good to see their rapport hasn't changed in this third season. I felt so bad for Molly. Both dh and I enjoyed the addition of Mary.
I was not able to get quite as into the second episode only because of the way it jumped back and forth, though overall I liked how they wove it all together. I enjoyed the script and the costumes/scenery (the reception hall was lovely!!!).
Cumberbach is so very, very good as Holmes.

I found this article about the ties between the show and the story on which it is based. It covers the second episode. For those who enjoy fun factoids.
ETA: And this blog has references from the first episode.

I'veenjoyed Sherlock from the beginning. It is delightful! I watch it alone, but dh just started watching Downton with me from the first because he has a work event this Spring at Point to Point at Wnterthur, which will be during the height of their Downton Abbey costumes display. Anyway, maybe I'll be able to convince him to tive sherlock a go. It is a lot more fun.

We just started watching it on Netflix.
I like the modern updates - to an extent. I kind of feel that the "alternative lifestyle" comments just don't need to come quite so fast and furious. I understand British culture as different from American (raised on "Keeping Up Appearances"), but I feel like the nuances are really over-done.
Season 2 Episode 2 - I had to keep reminding myself about the cultural differences. And my son did CHOOSE to close his eyes a few times. "Just tell me when I can open them!" (like I wanted to see it either?)
:)
