Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I have exciting news to share! Please pray for me as I prepare to be received as a novice into the Lay Dominicans at the Dominican House of Studies in Washington, D.C. on Sunday, January 19th.

I've been attending postulancy formation for about 8 months now, discerning whether I am being called to this "vocation within a vocation". When I become a novice, I officially become a Dominican religious and begin to follow the rule (daily Mass, Morning and Evening Prayer, Rosary, prayers for all deceased Dominicans, monthly chapter meetings, study, and apostolate). I could even use the initials O.P. after my name if I wanted! The Novitiate is one year, then if I still feel called and am approved to proceed, the next step is a three year temporary profession, then final lifetime profession.

The Dominican charisms are prayer, study, and preaching. All of these fitting in perfectly with my interests and personal charisms of teaching and evangelization.

Catherine of Siena, Martin de Porres, Rose of Lima, Louis de Montfort (parish priests can become Lay Dominicans too), Pier-Giorgio Frassati, and Margaret of Castello are all famous lay Dominican saints.

My name in religion will be Rose of Lima (I was born on her feast day). It's funny, my youngest son Zachary was born on the feast of St. Martin de Porres (the most perfect patron saint for him in so many ways). My husband's patron saint is St. Thomas Aquinas, another famous Dominican. So far there is no Dominican St. Nathan (my other son's name) or Nathaniel, but there are several Josephs (his middle name) (all martyed in Vietnam in the 1860's) and a couple of Bartholomews (Bartholomew the Apostle is of course the same person as the Nathaniel mentioned in the Gospels).

Thank you for your prayers!!!

I’ll trade you prayers! I just started my formation as well! I’m a bit jealous that you get to be received into THE Dominican House of Studies! That is terrific!
I’m still discerning....I’d love to hear more as you continue your journey and I will definitely be praying for you!

4 lads mom - where are you? Are you just starting the postulancy? Can I pray for you by name? You can PM if you prefer!
