Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I was reading my May/June 2013 edition of Gilbert magazine and there is an article about the sister of Chesterton's wife. The girls were both educated in a Froebel school which kind of made me chuckle since CM had a lot to say about that!

Anyway, the article discusses the untimely death of Gertrude, Frances' sister. Frances would have been in her mid to late 20's at this point and was engaged to Chesterton. After her sister's death, "Frances took a leave from the PNEU and traveled to Italy to see beauty and attempt to reconcile what had happened." That sentence just made me excited! So, since I am lazy, I thought I would post on here to see if anyone knew anything about this connection!

Michelle used to have a reference to this on the old Mater Amabilis site. I can't find it on the new one, however. But, yes, Chesterton's wife worked in Charlotte Mason's schools.

Frances Chesterton wrote (see 85) "An Impression" for the Memoriam of Charlotte Mason.

This is from the old Mater Amabilis site:

Quote:
G.K. Chesterton and the PNEU

This picture shows G.K. and Mrs. (Frances) Chesterton with Dorthea Steinthal (standing), the very first PUS (Parent's Union School) student. Dorthea's mother Emmeline is said to have been a great friend of the Chestertons and was highly instrumental in starting the PEU (Parent's Educational Union, later changed to the Parent's National Education Union or PNEU). Before her marriage, Mrs. Chesterton worked in the London office of the PNEU. Seated in the middle is Rhoda Bastable.

If you search Frances Chesterton and PNEU you can find some of her writings. Nancy Carpentier Brown has been giving talks and writing books to bring out more of Frances Chesterton, including a talk that highlights her education influence. Frances worked at the PNEU with Charlotte Mason at the turn of the 20th century, she wrote about education, ideas which are still relevant today.
