Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

With our recent chats on clothes and being frugal I thought I's share a few tips I've recently learnt regards maternity clothes shopping. Hoping you might have some further tips to share.

In the past I've gone op-shopping (thrift) for maternity clothes and rarely find anything, and if I do they are hideous. Remember the tent shirts that our mothers, and ahem I did with my first few babies 20- years ago Fashions have changed and whilst it took me awhile to accept the all embracing pregnant look I have to admit I like it now. Anyhow I digress.

Thanks to a few tips on the internet when op-shopping lately I've been taking a different look at clothes, I look for dresses in a size larger than I normally wear and home in on certain fabrics.   A mix of cotton and one or more of the following viscose/elastine/spandex/polyester work really well in providing a drapey, flattering look. Skirts also work well in these fabrics.

For tops, I've been searching for a plain T-shirt in a size larger with a mix of cotton and polyester and then adding a small strip of elastic on the sides to make maternity t-shirts. Another tip from the internet. Also I tried several different styles of tops on in the shop and developed an idea of what looked flattering, buying a size larger in tops that criss-crossed over, or gather and drop from under the bust work well. Though once again only is certain drapey fabrics. It doesn't work well in only cotton or linen fabrics.

My sil sent me several shorts that were low waisted and stretchy and they have worked up until now (6 month) though they are no longer comfortable. I've also converted regular jeans into maternity jeans and now we are in spring I'm thinking of converting regular shorts into maternity shorts, in the same method.

Anyone else have tips to share?

Well since you mentioned the style already.. my absolute favorite maternity outfits for spring/summer are the babydoll style tunic (that's gathered under the bust usually like a top that goes to under the bust and then with a gathered "skirt" to the top). I like the tunic or short dress length.. and then I wear capri leggings with it.. which is another item that you can usually go up a size and they'll work through pregnancy. It's light and breezy and comfy and because it doesn't bulk up your shoulders or legs you don't feel like you're overly large.

Oh and you can look for a similiar style of swimsuit in plus sized clothing if you don't like the maternity tanks style or wear a bikini.

Jodie
The babydoll and leggings sound lovely! Obviously I'll have to look further afield than my opshops, cause I have never seen leggings there nor tops like that

Thanks for the swimmer tip!! We're swimming here now and Ive been missing out. So you're saying look for the style I normally like in a larger size? and I had been thinking about a bikini and shorts for the pool at home, with maybe a cheesecloth shirt. Great tip, thinking outside the box again

This is a simliar style to the last time I bought a swimsuit to use in later pregnancy (then I ended up in the hospital and never got to more than try it on while I was pregnant) I like it because it has a built in bra and then the top is loose.. and you wear bikini style shorts under it.. on me it comes down to mid-thigh. The one I got the straps are not only adjustable but they hook onto loops in the back so I criss crossed them and never worry about the straps slipping down.

And this is a quick example of the type of top I mean.
