Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I found some books at a garage sale this spring that I believe to be stolen. It was at a family sale that I knew most and I'm related to one. The books came from someone who had bought at auction a storage unit that hadn't been paid in many months so the contents of the unit were sold off. Turns out some of the books are brand new library books from two different libraries. There are no markings in the books as no longer property of the library and the spine was fresh and still stiff. There is no going back to the person I got them from. The libraries are not local. I thought I should contact the library and tell them I had found their books, but I have no information to tell them besides they were found in a storage unit (location unknown). Yet, I feel guilty about having these books. I was told I was making a big deal out of nothing.

Obviously your conscience is telling you to contact the library, when you do you'll be at peace. It will be up to the library to work out a way to get them back as they are a distance away, they may tell you to keep them. You're not making a big deal out of nothing, you are being a wonderful example to those around you, particularly your children in living an honest life

If there are bar codes in the books, you could write a list of them and give that list to the libraries in question; that would help with an inventory/shelf check.

Your heart is in the right place, and as a fellow book lover, I would do the same thing if I were you. It's not nothing...taxpayer money bought those books, and I think it is wonderful that you want to return the books if possible. As a taxpayer, I appreciate your honesty.

No reason not to contact the library

Fwiw, though, *I* have a couple of library books in our home that we paid for because they were "lost."

So, unless you are talking a box full here, it might not be that they were stolen but were missing long enough for the original owners to simply pay for their replacement before finding them.

That's true. I'm not sure that the thought that they were stolen would even occur to me . . . I'm ashamed to say! I guess I'm too well acquainted with my own lameness in the area of library books to suspect foul play. :)
