Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My youngest bought a hamster with his birthday morning and the thing is sneezing. At least that is what is sounds like to me. This is new for her. She is also scratching around in her bedding and just not acting like she normally acts. Any ideas? Bedding has been changed and cage scrubbed with soap and hot water every 5-6 days. Water replaced too. The water bottle was leaking and we replaced the bedding on Saturday because it was wet. Water bottle was fixed. I feel like we are taking care of her correctly. I would hate for her to die. Of course it is day 15 of the 15 day guarantee from the pet store. I did prepare ds before he left for sports camp this morning that I didn't know what was wrong and that death could happened. He was upset at first but was better when I said we could always get another.

Update below.

Oh how sad! We had one hamster die very young, and another live for several years. I know this might sound stupid, but it is spring/early summer. Maybe the poor thing has allergies?

One thing you can try is grapefruit seed extract. I would mix 2 drops in a tablespoon of water. Use an eye dropper and place it in the back of her throat. Twice a day for three days should be enough. If she gives you a hard time, you can just put it in the drinking water. GFSE is a natural antibiotic. I have used this with various pets and it always seems to help. Sadly hamsters are generally short lived but this may get her over her cold.

Sadly, little pocket pets often do come home from the pet store incubating an illness, because they've been housed with other animals or exposed to more infectious things in that setting. And it's sometimes hard to find vets who will treat them, though I have taken guinea pigs and rabbits to the vet. Never a hamster, though . . .

One thing you might consider is what kind of bedding you have. If it's cedar, you might want to change to something like aspen shavings or, better, one of the non-wood/non-dusty beddings, as cedar is often a respiratory irritant, and even other kinds of shavings (aspen, pine) can have a lot of dust.

Hope she gets better! Hamsters are short-lived (1-2 years, typically), but you'd hate her lifespan with you to be two weeks!

Hamster stopped continuously coughing/sneezing by lunch time and was acting normally by yesterday evening. We think maybe it was because we left the ceiling fan on in the room she is in. I do hear a little cough/sneeze once in awhile, so she isn't completely better.

Thanks everyone for some ideas!
