Our local homeschool group has had many posts about the federal imposed common core curriculum sweeping the country and I am sure you all have heard about it. I was surprised to here that the textbook companies were already starting to adapt their texts. Do if you want to keep using existing versions of workbooks and such you might need to stock up--One mom posted that Math U See for example is clearances their current workbooks to make room for their new Common Core adapted texts.

I think most people are probably completely unaware of any such thing. They send their kids to school and figure whatever they're getting is good and worthwhile. I don't think it's that they don't care, I just don't think they are as invested in researching and knowing the particular details of various curriculums.

Here is a place to start: http://www.janice-campbell.com/2013/04/02/what-does-the-comm on-core-mean-for-homeschoolers/
Also, from what I have read, many Catholic Dioceses are also jumping on board with this as they feel since the textbooks will change to accomodate CC and ACT/SAT and such they need to have their students prepared.

Sadly, from our experience in the diocesan Catholic high school system, the Catholic schools are just public schools that charge more and say grace before meals. I couldn't see anything different in their approach to education and curriculum design, and that's truly unfortunate. I was very saddened and disappointed by the whole experience. I hope it's better in other dioceses, but the problem is that the underlying approach to educating is totally secularized and does nothing to develop the mental and spiritual life of the student. Instead, the idea seems to be just to cram- them-full-of-factoids-so-they-can-pass-the-tests-so-they -can-get-into-a-good-college-so-the-schoo-can-look-good -and-make-more-money-by-getting-more-students that they encourage in ambitious, prideful, and materialistic undertakings. Wow, didn't mean to go on like that, but it's really upsetting, ykwim?
Oh, and I'm hoping the established homeschool legal rights will help preserve our freedoms, but I'm signing petitions and intend to write my Congressmen, too. I know my representative is opposed to Common Core, but not my senator.

Here is an article in Crisis Mag that talks about the Gates Foundation and their backing/funding of Common Core.

Lindsay--I think potentially companies could go out of business as really it seems that the federal gov't will be picking the textbooks/companies who are most willing to comply with their standards. Bleck!

What would Math U See be changing?!?! This is distressing. I don't know much about what actual changes CC makes to curriculum, but I thought it had more to do with literature choices (moving away from fiction to non-fiction). What could they do to/with math?!?

I don't know much about the proposed math changes either.
I find it all so distressing because, when I read the standards themselves, they seem to be saying, "Science and history class should include living books rather than just texts." It IS true that children should be reading plenty of non fiction, Charlotte Mason certainly included lots of biographies, histories, and natural science materials in her early elementary reading. But then I see the interpretation by school boards and beaurocrats as, "Let's have the kids read more restaurant menus in class," and I think everyone has lost their mind!!!

You can read the standards themselves herel I don't think they are so vey bad. It is when you start reading through the proposed guides to using the standards put out by the individual school districts that you might need duct tape to keep your head from exploding!

Sorry to serial post, but the biggest red flag to me, personally, is that the standards are self described as "college prep." The end goal of education, it would seem, from the developers' point of view, is to get children into college and to prepare them to graduate from college.
I honestly think that a Charlotte Mason approach could meet the standards quite readily, but philosophically, education should be about developing a whole person. College is not the be all, end all.
That is interesting about the Gates Foundation funding it. They also funded Kahn academy. Now, I have super duper serious problems with their internatinal, population control agenda!! BUT, it doesn't sound like their goal was really to create automatons in schools since they are also supporting alternative education means like Kahn. I'm not sure it is the standards themselves that are the problem so much as the chaos that ensues when beaurocrats attempt to fix anything on a large scale.

In the end it is really taking away control from local districts and because compliance will be tied to funds being received from the federal government. Additionally, I am seeing concerns that there will be more sexual education/health standards.

Yes, it is all so maddening. The standards are actually quite vague and it is stated many times that the methods and curriculum for achieving them are not prescribed. I think that the whole situation is being used as a power grab by many. I mean, really, how hard would it be to simply send the individual schools the standards and trust them to comply? But there doesn't seem to be any trust about anything anymore. Everything must be prescribed by a government "expert."
And honestly, they should have implemented the standards in some individual schools and studied the results, etc... There was no field testing, which is just silly.

Really this is about principle. The Feds should not be setting the standards.
The fear is that this will creep into homeschool regulation. However, even if it doesn't technically do so, it does if our kids have to take any standardized tests. So if you used XYZ Math and gave your child the 3rd grade CAT only to find out that XYZ did not cover multiplication but the CAT does, you might be mad.
Most math curriculums already cover the cc. The only changes i have seen relate to moving some concepts to earlier grades. For example, including weights and measures in Kindergarten. There is a push to making K more academic. There are some concepts that have switched between grades or where they are focusing more on one topic than they use to.

And the chief architect of Common Core (David Coleman) has recently been elected the president of the College Boards - so expect the SAT to change towards Common Core standards. ACT and AP exams to follow I'm sure. What I'm reading is making me so angry.
