My husband is a movie buff. He also loves documentaries. He recently came back to the Church with the hunger to learn. Are there any suggestions on good documentaries out there?
I just bought him, Peter Keeper of the Keys, with Steve Ray. It's part of a series called, The Footprints of God. We really like it (once we got past the fact that he reminds us of George from Seinfeld ) and are going to get more of the series.
Thank you!

Jennifer,
We love this series -- once I could get past the "Australian outback" hat and some of his other mannerisms -- they are great for teaching and learning. We love the Mary and the Paul ones especially!
A must-see for Catholics is Catechism of the Catholic Church which is a 6-part interview between John Haas and Cardinal Schoenborn. Cardinal Schoenborn was the chief editor of the catechism when it was revised back in the early 90s. The gentleness of Cardinal Schoenborn's tone hides his strong arguments and proofs for Catholicism and all that we believe.
We have a video on the Shroud of Turin which is fabulous (and I think Ignatius Press or somewhere may still carry).
Jesus of Nazareth is really popular around here and very accurate from the Catholic view. It's almost doucmentary in it's telling but is a story so you really get into the characters. My dh will only let us watch the parts that are liturgically appropriate -- during Lent we watch right up to Palm Sunday and then during Holy Week we watch a bit each night until we get to his Passion adn Resurrection. At Christmas we watch his birth. Makes my kids "antsy" but Dad's in charge!
If your dh is a history buff, he might like The Mission with Robert DeNiro and Jeremy Irons. It's a very good retelling of the Jesuit's attempts to mission-ize in South America. It's pretty harsh and graphic so you might not want the younger ones to see it.
We do lots of videos here because dh teaches Middle Schoolers and likes to show them videos occasionally to bring a point home. If I think of others, I'll post.

Mary,
Thank you sooo much! This is a great start! You cracked me up with the "Austrailian Outback" look. I think I'll take your advice and get either the Mary or Paul one next.
Jesus of Nazareth is so wonderful. I need to own that. I loved watching that when I was little. I think they used to show it around Easter.
Great info.!

Jesus of Nazareth is an important movie with great actors. I think the actor played Our Lord with great dignity.
I would like to make one small comment regarding Catholic content. Our Lady is depicted as experiencing pain in childbirth and this is not consistent with Catholic teaching on Our Lady's Immaculate Conception and Perpetual Virginity.
In my opinion, questionable also is her despair-like weeping at the foot of the Cross.

My brother is also a convert and we loaded him up with great Catholic movies. He isn't much of a reader, thanks to a ps education. Not all were exactly documentaries but were enjoyable and sparked a lot of conversations and discussion on the Faith.
A Man for All Seasons : St. Thomas a Becket(not the one with Charleton Heston)
The Reluctant Saint : St. Joseph of Cupertiono
Any Bishop Sheen talks on dvd from Ignatius Press
The Scarlet and the Black~ real story of a priest inside the Vatican smuggling Jewish families
Pope John Paul the 2nd~ with Albert Finney
A Witness to Hope~ about JP2
Keys of the Kingdom ~with Gregory Peck
These titles just came to mind and my brother really enjoyed.
He also loved The Song of Bernadette.

I'm sorry. I was terse in my last post. Our Lady's Immaculate Conception freed her from Original sin and the effects of Original sin.One of these effects is pain in childbearing.
I mentioned the Perpetual Virginity in the same line becuase this is such a beautiful mystery that Our Lady remains a Virgin before, during and after the birth of the Lord. I think the way the movie presented the birth of the Lord doesn't depict the birth as especially mysterious and wondrous.
This quote is from the Catechism:
The deepening of faith in the virginal motherhood led the Church to confess Mary's real and perpetual virginity even in the act of giving birth to the Son of God made man. In fact, Christ's birth "did not diminish his mother's virginal integrity but sanctified it." And so the liturgy of the Church celebrates Mary as Aeiparthenos, the "Ever-virgin".
Catechism of the Catholic Church #499

Hi Helen,
I don't feel that you were terse at all .
In addition to what you have shared, I also point out to the family that the two scenes you refer to don't necessarily represent how "regular" women birth (on their back, tortured, paniced, and then passed out afterward) or how women grieve (flailing, screaming, despairing.) Having said that, I do enjoy Jesus of Nazareth and watch it each Lent.
Helen, your love and respect for Mary is so evident in all you do here. Thanks for taking the time to share with us.
Love,
