Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My husband was telling me this weekend how a bit ago, he'd been watching Deadliest Catch (don't judge him ) when one of the new captains shared his advice for how you tell someone they've done something wrong.

1) Tell them something funny.
2) Tell them where they messed up.
3) Tell them about a time when you did the same thing.

He said he's been trying to use that with his employees at work and that the formula really works well!

I thought it sounded like a great "rule" to remember as a parent as well.

Does anyone have any other "rules" or simple advice that you've incorporated that has reaped benefits in your home and life?

Great twist on "The Sandwich" : say something positive, say the hard thing, say something positive :) Thanks!

Use I/we statements. Sincerely :)

No one likes being corrected. Period.

Make amends. Even if just for your tiny role in the mess, lol.

That's off the top of my head!

Currently we're working on "Do not move forward in an anxious state." We learned this in dog training so we call it the "We're better than a dog" rule .

Love,

More people will respond to a request for action only IF you are already occupied.

In otherwords.. "Would you please switch the laundry while I finish up these dishes?" will work much better between "equals" (and even boss to worker) than "So-n-so go switch the laundry!" while the speaker is sitting around doing nothing.

I keep trying to teach the older kids this "trick" for working with the younger kids.. The older kids are more like workers on the same level with more seniority but not really authority.

In college I got more done many times with requests framed in this manner than did the managers

My dad's favorite home improvement rule-to-live-by:

Any home improvement project, however small, will expand until it fills all available time in your schedule.

My dad's favorite commentary on life as a Catholic:

No Catholic event ever started on time.

Our corollary:

No Irish event ever started on time. (Dance included!)
