Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I've been to a chiropractor several times and had acupuncuture a couple of times. I always got good results from it (I had constant arm tingling and numbness due to a pinched nerve).

My dd has been having headaches for over two months. They come between 3-5pm about 2x a week. They are not debilitating, but they are painful. I've been taking her to the chiro for adjustments. He has noted that her neck was a little messed up probably due to how she sleeps. He has recommended accupuncture due to where and when her headaches occur. Have any of your children ever had accupuncture? I didn't ever think twice about it when it was for me, but I get a little nervous thinking about it for my child. She's not nervous at all and wants to do it if it will help alleviate her headaches.

My other thought before pursuing this is possibly allergies. She doesn't show any visible signs (no nasal problems, itchy eyes or anything)of allergies, though.

I'm not really trying to get medical advice here, just wondering if any of you have had experience with acupuncture. THanks!

Hi Courtney,

I hope it is not to late to post a reply but I would caution against doing anything along the lines of New Age practices. Let me explain.

For years I have been using homeopathic medicine with the children and I by no means place any new age spirtual junk into why it works. I would just say that it works well with my family's chemistry.

Then one day I was asking about other forms of New Age practices and a good Catholic friend of mine had just gone to a local talk about this and sent me a bunch of good information in the mail.

Apparently the Vatican recently released a document called "Jesus Christ, the Bearer of the Water of Life: A Christian Reflection on the New Age" exposing the New Age beliefs and practices. It is also where the Pope warns Catholics about the spirtual dangers. I had no idea so I have been trying to do a lot more reading and learning about the topic.

Here is the name and information of a local lady that has begun a ministry under the approval of our Archbishop to help Catholics become more aware of these false spirtualities that have crept into our Christian and Catholic circles... She publishes a newsletter and I am sure could mail anyone interested more information!

I also learned Fr. Mitch Pacwa has a couple recorded talks in the audio library at EWTNthat you can download to learn more... if you are interested.

Thanks for the heads up, Leslie. I really don't get into the New Age spiritual stuff of acupuncture. I use it as I would traditional medicine. My dd did have acupuncture and has only had 2 headaches in the last 3 weeks (one was after being at Six Flags all day ). I don't know how or why it works, but it did. My chiropractor never tries to talk to me about the theory or New Age stuff behind it and I am not really interested in that part. I will check out the links you mentioned, though. Thank you!

Courtney,
My chiropractor is a devout Christian who numbers practically the entire staff of HSLDA among his clients. No new age stuff there, but definitely alternative, and good alternative. We've had some amazing recoveries with chiropractic and he works in conjunction with an acupuncturist when necessary. I wouldn't hesitate at his recommendation.

From the Jesus Christ, the Bearer of the Water of Life: A Christian Reflection on the New Age...

"First of all, it is worth saying once again that not everyone or everything in the broad sweep of New Age is linked to the theories of the movement in the same ways. Likewise, the label itself is often misapplied or extended to phenomena which can be categorised in other ways. The term New Age has even been abused to demonise people and practices. It is essential to see whether phenomena linked to this movement, however loosely, reflect or conflict with a Christian vision of God, the human person and the world. The mere use of the term New Age in itself means little, if anything. The relationship of the person, group, practice or commodity to the central tenets of Christianity is what counts."

I'm very grateful to my chiropractor . My back and neck pain are under control. My dd's spinal curve has been minimized without surgery or other inefficient means. My ds's sport related stress has been relieved. My dh has avoided surgery and reduced pain caused by sports injury.

Love,

I know my chiropractor is a Christian as well. I really think alternative medicine teaches us or reminds us to trust how our bodies were created.

I had arm numbness and tingling for 3 years (I think from holding babies with mainly my left arm--I'm so left dominant). I went to an internist and had all kinds of tests run and was eventually given a brace. No relief. When we moved to Dallas, I finally gave the chiro a try. After 9mths of treatment, I was free of the tingling and numbness! It sure beats surgery which was the next step the dr. suggested. I wish I had thought about the chiro when my ds had recurrent ear infections as an infant. I hate the fact that he lived on antibiotics his first 12 mths of life. I really like the fact that our chiropractor treats the whole body and looks at the big picture rather than treating symptoms.

Courtney,

I do not have any experience with acupuncture but I have a cousin who was injured in a gymnastics accident who has had a lot of relief with accupuncture.

I use homeopathy second only to nutrition as a healing choice for our family. We have use chiropractic medicine when necessary. My Christopher was breech until two weeks before birth. I scheduled 5 appointments with a chiropractor to encourage him to turn. I had one appointment and he had already turned.

We have a wonderful Catholic homeopathic MD who taught us to seek alternatives when dissatisfied with allopathic hoopla.

BTW, my ds9 used to get regular headaches at that time of day and above mentioned MD told us that the biggest cause of headaches, esp at that time of day was dehydration. Drinking several glasses of water often helps my family when we have headaches, FWIW.

Wow! I had a c-section with dd (she was my first) b/c she was breech. The OB tried a version (tried to turn her a week before she was born) but it didn't work. Another case where a chiropractor could've helped!

I'm grateful that I've found this chiropractor. Our insurance doesn't cover any of it, but it's still worth paying out of pocket to me.

Well, Courtney, the chiropractor got Katie to turn at 38 weeks. At 39 weeks, she went breech again and stuck her foot in the birth canal for emphasis. I was four centimeters by then and even the chiropractor couldn't get me out of that fix. Everyone was afraid of cord prolapse. Immediate section. This time, I'm going at least once a week from 30 weeks on. We'll see...

Ouch! I had a midwife at home who was willing to deliver breech babies but I did not want to be home if he stayed breech (too nervous abt. the cord, too.) I would have gone with the section in the hospital had he not turned. No local doctors will deliver vaginal breeches here.

Wow ,

I don't know how you ladies do it but thank you so much for the link to the article by the Vatacin on New Age. I look forward to actually reading through it. I tried some google searches and could not come up with it

Unfortunately I have a sister (not Catholic) that is totally into the New Age movement and uses all kinds of acupuncturist, yoga, meditation etc... She is falling hard and heavy into the Waldroff spirtuality    I know she feels connected to our family because we use a Chiro & homeopathic treatments and I want to be clear that I am not leading my family down the wrong path (if that makes sense?).

I am just grateful that the Magisterium has spoken about this and given guidelines for the protection of our spirtuality.
