Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I'm looking for a pattern or patterns for modest yet flattering skirts for my daughters. Not frumpy. We've been searching for awhile, but I can't seem to find what we'd like. Something similar to a maxi skirt would be nice..something that's flowy but not too overly gathered...needing about sizes ranging from 7-14.
I'm not looking for prairie skirts -- they take too much time and they're fairly easy to find.
Does anyone know of any such patterns?

I love this pattern from Oliver + S. It's free, simple to make, and you can choose the length that you like.

Our library had the book Sew What Skirts. It has some cute and simple ones.

I have a pattern from 2002 for a wardrobe including a great a-line maxi skirt that was super-quick and easy to make. It uses double-fold bias tape (instead of facing) to finish the waistline and as a tie closure (with a side zipper). No gathers or ruffles or elastic. Just two pattern pieces for the skirt.

Yes, you have to buy a zipper and bias tape (unless you know how to make bias tape?), but since there are only two pattern pieces and no gathers, it takes very little fabric (for a maxi skirt).

I'm still wearing the skirt I made from it ten years later- it's very flattering. Fitted and smooth at the waist and flows nicely over the hips without adding any bulk.

If you're interested, I will go dig around in my garage and find it for you. (I would even be happy to make a copy of it and mail it to you if you can't find a new version.)

You can also look online for directions in making gored skirts. They're pretty simple to make without a pattern.
