Has anyone seen the new movie "For Greater Glory", about the Cristeros in Mexico and Blessed Jose Sanchez del Rio. This review is interesting, but I'd really like to hear from someone who has actually seen the movie. We're planning to attend a rally opposing the HHS mandate on Friday and there's a theater in the area showing "For Greater Glory". Some who have seen the movie draw parallels between the persecution Catholics underwent in Mexico and the current anti-Catholic climate in the U.S. so I thought it might be fitting to take our teenage and young adult dc to see the film. Well, I haven't yet seen it but I am definitely planning to soon. Thanks for the review link. That is interesting. I hadn't realized it was rated R and from how she describes it, it does indeed sound like an unfair rating.
One of my best friends (homeschooling mom) saw it this weekend and said it was fabulous. The character of Bl. Jose is extremely moving. Her husband is from Mexico and she felt it does a great job of portraying the culture. I will have to ask her about her thoughts on teenagers seeing the movie.

I have not seen the movie, but many in my homeschool group did and loved it. That said, all cautioned about the violence. One mom said that you need a "strong stomach" to watch it. Another said it was hard to watch, in parts. And another said her dh saw it, and knowing her, he told her not to see it. Someone else mentioned executions (she did not go into detail.)
Here is what Catholic News Service said about the gory parts and rating:
"So, despite the elements listed below, "For Greater Glory" is probably acceptable for mature adolescents -- and may, indeed, do them a world of good.
The film contains considerable action violence with some gore, the torture of a child and at least one mildly vulgar term. The Catholic News Service classification is A-III -- adults. The Motion Picture Association of America rating is R -- restricted. Under 17 requires accompanying parent or adult guardian." Here is their link.
I'd say the biggest complaint, though, wasn't about the violence in the movie, it was the ...ahem...in the R-rated movie trailers shown before the movie! Now that had everyone talking and complaining!
Also, most everyone mentioned that there were not mamy people in attendance at the movie (people were counting 20-40 at each showing.)
I'd love to hear other's comments. Please check back in if you go!

I have not seen the film, but wanted to add some historical info from a friend of mine. Her husband's great-uncle was one of the martyrs in this tragic conflict, and he says that the portrayal of what happened is very true to life.

Her child in question is almost 13, and she added that after thinking about it they will probably take the 11 year old also. And this is a family that is protective about veiwing for their children.

Nancy, fascinating to know someone who has a connection with that historical event! Thank you ladies so much for your input.
I'm thinking we might wait for the DVD. I forget about the "atmosphere" in theaters ~ another element we prefer to avoid. When we went to see The Passion at the theater, the previews ~ including heightened sound level ~ were so offensive & overwhelming that I had to leave until they were finished. It's so nice to be able to preview a movie at home and be able to skip over any parts that might be offensive or too strong for younger viewers.

Here in Madison the Knights of Columbus had to go to bat to get even one theater to show it so if at all possible it would be great to support this so it can do well and get in a lot of theaters.

Well, we went to see For Greater Glory, after all, with a group of Catholic young men ages 16-21. All thought it was an excellent, inspiring movie, certainly worthy of our support and wider circulation. 
I was pleasantly surprised by how well the violence was handled and agree with the previously linked article disputing the R rating. I didn't need to cover my eyes once ~ which is saying a LOT! The most disurbing elements for me, as a woman, were those that were implied rather than shown directly, along with multiple hangings, which I believe were an accurate depiction of events that occurred ~ again, disturbing to see, but certainly not violence displayed simply for the sake of blood and gore. The young men in our group had seen The Passion, LOTR and various comparable war movies ~ they readily agreed that the violence in FGG was not gratuitous or gory, but seemed to accurately portray historical events of the time.
The R-rating definitely seems unfairly applied ~ a possible attempt to deter widespread reception of the film's message!?
Two scenes in the movie involving women were handled very respectfully ~ with the innocence of older G-rated movies. In one scene, female Cristeros who carried ammunition from location to location, were shown in 1920's modest underclothing (mostly slips, but some underwear that was not indecent) as they wrapped bands around their waists and filled them with bullets ~ this delicately illustrated the women's vulnerability in such a dangerous mission. Another scene involves the future general of the Cristeros discussing the decision to lead the group with his wife, while they are in bed late at night (fully clothed, with only a brief respectful kiss). Again, the scene gives viewers an accurate sense of the couples' vulnerability in making a decision which could greatly impact their family (credits at the end of the movie provide much greater insight into the effect the Cristeros war actually had on their lives).
A tip for dealing with innappropriate previews ~ while purchasing our tickets, I asked when the actual movie would begin ~ the ticket clerk helpfully explained that feature time is usually about ten minutes later than the listed time. I stepped into the theater while everyone else took a last minute bathroom break and was very thankful our group was able to miss the offensive "ahem" previews. Information about the local theater was displayed just before the actual movie began. Thank you SO much Stacy for the heads-up!
For Greater Glory emphasizes the importance of standing up for rellgious freedom, a theme repeatedly echoed by speakers for Friday's rally against the HHS mandate! The story line is very appropos "for such a time as this"! After the movie we discussed the fact that there is reasonable discussion over whether extreme violence was an appropriate response in the Cristeros rebellion, especially in light of the extreme violence perpetrated against Mexican Catholics, as well as whether violence is the appropriate response in any such circumstance. No matter what, Catholics viewing For Greater Glory can certainly gain keener insight into whether we too would be ready to give up our lives for our Faith and for religious liberty! A compelling question indeed! I consider For Greater Glory to be a must see for Catholic adults and teens mature enough to handle witnessing the kind of violence portrayed.
Blessed Jose Sanchez del Rio, and all Cristeros martyrs, please pray for us and for our nation! Viva Cristo Rey!

After Cash and I saw it on Father's Day night, I told my local group to run, not walk, to see this movie. A few days later I took my three oldest (16, 15 and 13) and a few other teens to see it.
I agree with everything Servant wrote above. Wonderful summary and thoughts! The violence was not gratuitous in any way. Now, the previews...terrible, ridiculous, disturbing, gratuitous violence. Awful! Skip those if at all possible.
If it is still playing in a theater near you, I would highly recommend you see it as soon as you can. It was excellent!
