Have you ever noticed that the older you get, the more uncoordinated you become(or seem)?
Here I am, pushing 40 soon, taking karate! Now the black belts are all 2 to 5 years older than me,so you think I'd be ok. But they started in their late 20's and early 30's and some even before. None of this is instinctual to me.... I struggle to learn.every.single.thing.
I'm learning patterns of movements, and while I can remember the sequence, I really, really struggle with coordinating those thoughts with my various body parts and timing.
While I completely enjoy learning karate, i'm wondering if I'm just getting too old...lol.
Do you find your learning curve at times becomes really steep and you struggle?

Hmm. Well, I'm coming up on 38 soon.
I've never been coordinated. I tried aerobics and Tae Bo in my 20's. I could never keep up with the instructors.
At least you had 40 good years of coordination
I mostly stick to my treadmill now.

Ditto. I'm so uncoordinated. My problem is when I'm giving a right or left command I have to think about which is right and left. And then I fall behind. It's been a problem since I was young. Even failed my driver's test because I made the wrong turn.

LOL.. I wouldn't say I've been incredibly coordinated, just more so in my 20's than i am now. I have never done well in aerobics either.
I just am finding it intensely challenging to even get 1 sequence down never mind the 8-12 in each pattern..lol. And I have 4 thus far, adding 2 more and teaching 1...eeek.

I have the right and left issues too! And since I can't wear my wedding ring in karate, I have no tactile reminder of right and left. My response is "which left?" The black belts have come to accept that I'm challenged with right and left, 2 of the wives are similarly challenged so it's no surprise. My dd8 has known right from left starting around 2 yo! Then there's me....

Well, my excuse isn't just that I'm 40, I also have little kids still and a nursing toddler so my mind doesn't have time to coordinate other activities that aren't involved in nursing or picking up a kid yet.

Dh is often heard saying: "No, your OTHER left!"
I totally understand!
Besides, I have too many other things on my "learning curve" that something has to give for mental-survival purposes alone!

I can be reasonably coordinated. And if I take the time to focus and memorize a sequence (like in the Wii Fit) then I think I am still reasonably coordinated. But if I'm trying to follow along without having either memorized the sequence or not getting really focused then my body reflects that in less coordination.
I have found that it's much much harder to give the time and attention to memorizing and focusing at this time because there is SO VERY MUCH going on that I'm head coordinator for. And learning to let the rest go in order to focus is a lesson all of it's own.

Awesome! Good for you for doing something so good for you! My husband is taking tae kwon do with my 8 yo ds. This is his first year and he is 53. He knows your pain. Hang in there though.
I think we do lose some coordination and flexibility as we get older. I am 47 and feel it in every day situations. For example, I've always changed my babies on the floor. Wow! It's getting harder to get up, not to mention sitting in such a way that I can actually change them!
I'm cheering from the sidelines though!!!!! I have a lot of respect for you! Now I just need to get myself in gear and do something!!

Thank you. I have learned a lot in the last year, I have a green belt now(earned by getting through the 2nd degree black belt defenses, and knocking him silly I felt horrible!!)
I am now an assistant for the children's class....interesting to say the least.
But for every move, be it a pattern, or just a combination of movements - ie. inside block, outside block, punch combo, I take the first 5 moves to just sort out the order and kinda get the movements right..lol
It is a challenge. We are now getting into break holds and break falls.... this is extremely different to do... it also means sweeps are coming and falling during sparring.
I need to really focus to do it...lol.

Yep. I notice. Not that I've ever been super-graceful, but my toes now have permanent indents from bumping into things Or at least it feels that way!
My son is in tae-kwon-do and he has dropped hints about me joining. Hm. Maybe not. It looks like fun, and everyone there is super supportive. But, eh. I'm just not sure. And I'd have to think through the long skirt adaptation (possible, I'm sure - just more thought-process which is also deteriorating in "old" age) ;)

So, I stumbled across a good coordination workout! Bob Harper Inside Out Method Body Rev Cardio - there is a Balance and Butt 20 minute workout that will help with the balance issues. It was rough!

Just wanted to say I do karate too, just got my sand belt (it's right after green at our school and the first "upper belt") and I struggle with this so badly.
I don't know that it's age as much as it's the martial art form. It's SO different from what we do here in the west. Every time I learn a new form, it's like a new language. It doesn't seem intuitive, flowing from the previous form. It's a huge struggle. And some days, the most basic punches leave me feeling disoriented and I can't remember how to do them.
But that's why I keep at it. I love the challenge!
Also, I'm turning 39 in a couple of weeks and I'm usually the youngest in class unless some of the teens show up. We have lots of 40's and a few 50's.
Good for you - three of my kids were also doing it, but my 6yo lost interest. She'd rather do ballet and of course I don't blame her! Don't want to drive her to/pay for ballet classes either but that's another conversation. I love that my two teens are ahead of me in rank!

I started Tae Kwon Do at 39! I worked out/trained for 4 years. Earned a blue belt -
We moved, and we haven't found a school we like.
I found that my co-ordination left me years ago, too.
I was often heard to say that I used to be co-ordinated.
But, it saved me from shaming myself by ever again dancing in public
CatholicMommy, you should absolutely try it.
I might have felt foolish next to the kids that were in the class with me (or teaching it to me) - but I was in better shape than ever in my life and I felt great.
Our whole family did Tae Kwon Do, it was a blast!
