Hi ladies --
I wanted to let you all know that I'm on Colleen Carroll Campbell's Faith and Culture show on EWTN this week, talking about homeschooling. The show airs several times during the week, including tonight, Wednesday April 18, at 11 p.m. ET, 8 p.m. Pacific.
I don't really say anything all that earth-shaking, I don't think -- the plan had been for me to talk about homeschooling as counter-cultural, but at the last minute we decided just to talk about nuts and bolts and how-to, so it was off the top of my head! (and of course afterward I thought of a million things I *wish* I'd said, or said better . . . you know how that goes).
Anyway, I wanted to let you all know about it. This was a fun opportunity, and I hope and pray that the show will be an encouragement to current and would-be homeschooling families.
Sally

Sally, I have to record this! I caught just a small part of this before I went to bed and at first I kept saying "Sally Thomas, Sally Thomas, how do I know that name?" Duh! I did expect you to have a British accent, which doesn't even make sense!
Looking forward to seeing in entirety.

Oooo...thanks for letting us know, Sally! I'll have my son record it for me.
Good for you!

Jenn, that's funny, re my accent. For a native Southerner, I really have a non-accent, partly from living in places like Utah and the UK, and partly because I renounced my Southern accent at 5, because people on television didn't talk that way. (and now I've been one of them . . . how weird . . . )
I haven't seen the segment yet -- what I kept thinking, before and during the taping, was that I knew any number of homeschooling women like . . . oh, pretty much anyone here, for example . . . who could have brought so much wisdom and eloquence to the conversation, and why me, you know? And I think I completely forgot to talk about how faith and learning get integrated, which was what I'd meant to emphasize.
Anyway, my kids were pretty fascinated that I went out and bought makeup for the occasion. That, and getting to go to Boston for the taping, were the big attractions for our family.
:)

Sally, you did fabulous!! DH and I watched it and we kept saying "that sounds familiar!" Truly representative of our homeschooling experiences.

I did that, too, Sally. A lot of it was later than age 5 when I was more involved with music and theater stuff, but I never had a heavy accent such that Southerners would ask where I was from. When I first moved to the East Coast, people would notice I was from the South, but not anymore. They are often surprised when I tell them, and I never lived anywhere else but rural Alabama!
BUT, I can think of PLENTY of reasons they would choose you! Is it available online? I don't have television, but I would love to see you in action!

I don't have tv, either, Lindsey, but you can stream EWTN live. Last night's may have been the last airing for this show until it comes up in the rotations again. They tape ten segments each year, and they show over and over again, so you might expect to see it again in . . . about ten weeks? The show also airs on the radio. A friend of mine heard it on Ave Maria radio last weekend, and I know that Relevant Radio has a Faith and Culture slot, too.
You can access links to tv and radio schedules here.
Alternatively, they do sell episodes on DVD (through EWTN, I believe, not Colleen Carroll Campbell's site) -- if memory serves me, a single DVD is about $9. Even I have to buy one if I want to have it for posterity!
Sally
eta: DVDs are $15.

Sally, I watched yesterday. It was a wonderful segment. I could never speak off the cuff so clearly and precisely. Your picture of your homeschool was wonderful, not glossy, but realistic and attainable for other viewers to understand.
You've given me a few ideas to chew on!
I'm a native Southerner, but barely have a trace unless I move back to the deep South. Then I pick up really quickly!

Sally, I finally treated myself to watch your interview and...WOW!!! Congratulations and thank you for representing Catholic homeschoolers so well .
My 13ds watched it with me and was so excited asking, "Mom, you really know her?" ...you Rock Star you . At the part where you talked about online communities and friendships being real, I told my son, "That's me!"...us!
And guess what? You made me cry. I won't spoil the ending for others, but you nailed it when you talked about your dd's graduation. Nailed it!
Can I have your autograph?
Love,

And yes, I really meant that part about the online communities. I think so many people fear the isolation of homeschooling, not just for their kids, but for themselves.
I know a lot of us fear being too sucked into the computer -- I constantly struggle for balance -- but I think of the epistolary friendships of days gone by, when people maintained lifelong, sustaining relationships through letters, and I see communities like this one as more instantaneous, communal versions of that. Maybe the sole most comforting thing a person contemplating homeschooling can hear is, "You really won't be alone."
I'm home alone right now, while the kids are out with Dad, but I'm not alone, in the best kind of way.
Sally

Let me know if it comes on again. My DVR was full and I taped it later in the week, but it was a different episode!
