Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I'm new to the blogging community. I've had so many gracious comments, but I'm not sure of some things:

1) Should you answer all comments?

2) If yes, do you answer publicly below the comment or do you get their email and answer privately?

Thanks!

Jenn, I'm still new at blogging too, but I almost always answer the comments made at my blog. Only once did I do so by e-mail. I'm so grateful that someone took the time to read my post, let alone make a comment!

Maybe someone with more blog experience can let us know what they do!

If you respond to comments on the website, how can you be sure the poster will come back to read them?

Well, Jenn, I'm not sure they will! Most of the time I'm just saying thanks, but if someone had a specific question I can see how e-mail would be more efficient.

Now that I look back at my original answer, I wish I hadn't worded it the way I did. I didn't mean to imply I felt it was "proper ettiquette" to answer every comment; I certainly don't expect every comment I leave at someone's blog to be addressed ~ and sometimes it can be hard to remember all the places I left comments!

I guess, as usual, I'm just being overzealous about the whole thing. I guess I just like continuing the conversation (even if it's only in my head!).

professional bloggers will tell you, ALWAYS answer the comments. when i have time i e-mail and answer on the blog. otherwise i do one or the other. sometimes they're like e-mail and they fall into the pit -- i'm embarrassed that i can't answer every single one, but it's just the nature of the beast. and when you've got several beasts...

i think for us moms, it's okay to not answer each other's comments all the time, after all we "talk" here too... it's not like we're ignoring each other. but if you've got a first time visitor/first time commenter, an acknowledgement would be nice.

one more thing to add to the list, huh. the perils of blogging!

Ack, I had NO idea! I've been rudely blogging for years now.    I answer questions but almost never respond to the "that was a nice post" kind of comments. I try to comment on others' blogs that comment on mine though.

How do professional bloggers who get 50 comments a day reply to them all??

From the perspective of one who is not a blogger but a grateful partaker of all of your creativity and wisdom, I have to say that I never expect a response to my comments. I realize you are very busy moms, and I'm thankful you take the time to blog at all. I occasionally leave comments so that you know that you struck a particular chord with me, but there are times when I smile and nod and laugh and get teary and still move on without commenting---just the nature of my time right now.

All this to say that as a blog-reader, I don't think you should feel compelled to respond to comments, especially not every one. That just might put your children's education in jeopardy, unless you happen to be a radical unschooler.

Yes, I don't find it possible to reply to all my comments. I do try to answer all questions, either via email or on the blog. I very much appreciate and enjoy all the comments I get—those little comment notification emails make my day!—but I'm afraid I can't keep up with replying to all of them. Especially these days!

How do I set to get comment notification emails?

Go to Configure and click Preferences. The comments and trackback settings are there. Click the "Notify the author of the post via email when new comments are submitted" button.

BTW, I encourage everyone to accept trackbacks! (You might want to set it to approve-before-posting, if you're worried about trackback spam--I do get some spam now and then but it's easy to delete.) Trackbacks are a great way to see who's posting links to your blog.

gulp...help?!?

It is so funny that this topic was already here, as it was what I was going to ask about.

But -- can someone help me? HOW do I answer a comment? I am on homeschooljournal.net.

I have no idea. I can "edit" comments, but that doesn't seem like the right way to do it.

I'm set to accept trackbacks. And I think that trackbacks are when someone links to my blog from her blog. And I know that some people have done that. But I don't see any record of trackbacks. Where am I mistaken ?

And while I'm here, how does a typepad user comment on Blogger? I wanted to tell Helen how beautiful her late pregnancy picture is.

And, how do you permalink at Blogger?

A trackback is a little different from a link. Say I write a post in which I link to you. My post mentions your post and has a place to click to your blog--but YOUR readers don't know I've linked to you unless I *also* send a trackback ping. That's an extra step on my part. I find your trackback URL (which is different from your post URL) and enter it into my trackback box, and now on YOUR blog below your post there will be a notice telling your readers that I have written about you on my blog.

When you link, you're sending traffic to someone else's site. When you trackback, you're sending traffic from their site to yours. If that makes sense.

To comment on Blogger blogs, you click where it says "0 Comments" (or however many the post has.) Some blogger blogs will let you comment as Anonymous, but others require you to log in, which means you'd have to set up a Blogger account (but not necessarily a blog).

To get the permalink, click on the time the post was posted.

That all makes sense...so,is there no way to know if someone has linked to your blog from hers? Seems like that would merit a note of thanks even if every comment does not.

Oh, I wondered about this! I had linked to a post on Cay's blog, and so did Jenn, but only her trackback showed up on Cay's site. And that would be because I didn't set up a trackback, only a link! Thanks, Lissa.

I'm not sure how I did get that trackback set up properly, though, Dawn. I'll have to retrace my steps!

One thing I read recently about comments on blogs -- the blogosphere (how's that for a buzzword ) is intended as a community -- much like the forums here.

Yes, you might not get a response to a comment or you might not always be able to respond, but it's still a good idea to TRY to respond or comment. It keeps the conversation going -- Jenn and I and Alice had an interesting "discussion" about a sweater on my knitting blog. That's an example of how blogs build community.

Which, BTW, Mary, I'll have to post some further questions on your blog.......
