I posted today about an article that amused me: an economist's discussion of the most efficient way to peel a banana. Thought some of you might get a kick out of it as well!

Annie showed me the "real" way to peal a banana when she was only 3.
I don't know how we all got through childhood without figuring this out.

I had seen this article a while back. After that, we tried to peel them "the monkey way" but it never really took off for us

When I was in graduate school one of my classmates peeled her bananas from the bottom. She was Chinese and she was surprised at my interest in the way she was peeling her banana. I think she indicated that that is how they do it in China. It makes alot more since to have a handle but I still peel mine the hard way.

I have to vote for "bottom". My husband made a convert out of me after many years. I found that using the "top" seems to smush the banana more (and my kids do NOT eat smushed banana!). It seems to be easier to open from the bottom as well.
Thanks for the article, Lissa. I certainly enjoyed it and am passing it on to dh who works with a bunch of economists. Fun!

Too funny! I had no idea there was any other way to peel it except from the top-I've lived a sheltered life!
Although my mom was occasionally seen popping them in half and peeling each half from the middle. But I just thought she was weird.

All I know is NEVER, and I mean NEVER break the banana. All my kids, till about 5 or so, would pitch a major fit if the banana broke -- like somehow it wasn't the same anymore.
Now if THEY broke it while eating, that was fine !

I have to try it from the bottom because my kids don't like it when opening the banane makes the top a bit squishy either. No one will eat it then!

My nephew peels his from the bottom. I just figured it was a European thing. He also washes the outside of the banana, and his hands after eating it. His aunt, a Swiss physician, told us that they are covered with pesticides .
