We've had the ringer on the home phone turned off so long that it makes sense to just get rid of that phone altogether. For the most part, the only calls that go there are political calls, sales calls, and calls from ppl who ought to know better than to call during school . . . Mom! In the evening, my husband is home and we're having supper and doing family stuff and, well, I don't want the phone to ring then either so . . . I can't remember the last time we had it on.
In fact, I don't really like to talk on the phone much at all. MOSTLY when I need to talk to my husband, I email him. MOSTLY when he needs to talk to me, he emails me. MOSTLY my friends know my phone won't ring anyway so they email.
Sometimes, though, a call is in order so I don't really want to be without a phone at all. I just need something basic that will mostly be used to text (instead of email) with my husband, referral agency (for wk) and friends. Bothersome aside: in December I posted in our homeschool yahoo group asking for a dog expert. Someone posted back asking that I text her. Not being able to text, it is now almost Feb and I still haven't gotten to talk to her!
Add to all this that I lost my camera a while back. I would like a very decent camera. I want to be able to take pics of my girl at swim meets, with friends, in school, on trips, at violin events . . . you know, close ups, far offs, zooms, indoors, outdoors, on and on. I don't need to enlarge anything enough to hang on the wall but enough to put in a frame or in a book.
Really, I would like a very good camera that can text a lot and call a little.
I've looked into it and companies really seem to want to tell me how many megapixels I'll be getting but when I look up best camera or something, pixels don't seem to be as important as other things.
It is just all too confusing!
Could someone please point me to a really good camera that also has a phone attached!

cnet's best camera phones
my brother has the mytouch and several friends have the iphone and their pictures look really good. you could even buy iphone lenses. note that these won't be the same quality pics as a good DSLR.
iphone lenses from photojojo
i've also heard good things about olloclip though i have zero experience with it.

Just a couple thoughts on getting rid of a house phone if you haven't considered them.
Will you get a cell phone for the house? Do you ever leave your kids with a babysitter at the house? what about when you have a child old enough to be left at the house as babysitter? Do you use anything like a fax machine that uses a phone line? And a big one for me... I don't give my cell phone number to businesses or bills (like electric, trash etc). So that I'm not bothered with that stuff when I'm out and about with the kids.
There's certainly ways around those things, getting another cell phone for instance.. but are good things to consider when getting rid of a landline.

We just dropped our home phone/land line back to the most bare minimum plan which only costs us $7 a month so we just finished considering some of these things and they're still fairly fresh in my mind.
We use our iphones for pretty much all calls - home or not. Here is what our basic land line phone plan gives us:
** We can receive unlimited incoming calls.
** No long distance outgoing
** No caller ID
** Free 911 outgoing
** 5 local outgoing calls can be made on the phone each month
This allows for emergencies and keeping the land line for incoming calls, but significantly lowers the phone bill and landline phone useage which is fine since we primarily use our cell phones. We did purchase an additional cell phone for oldest dd for use while out with a friend, or for use while babysitting (and the cost of that was still cheaper than keeping the land line service).
We use 3G iphones - not the latest/greatest iphone. This is "yesterday's iphone".  But, that also makes them affordable. So...here's what "yesterday's iphone" camera would get you. The pics are a little grainy/pixelly to me, but overall pretty good. These are some pics I recently took with my iphone camera while on a nature walk:

Well, you know what . . . I don't really think we've considered all those issues and options re getting rid of the phone. Thank you for bringing them up; I definately have some thinking to do.

Awsome pics, Thank you. I think I would be very happy with that quality of picture. I've never actually owned an apple product before . . . maybe it's time.
