It's no secrect, I'm pretty behind on technology . My dd just got a kindle for her birthday from my in-laws and all the kids got a Wii for christmas from my parents. So...I need to purchase a router for the wireless capabilities. I just have an old fashion cable hook up modem on one desktop computer.
What am I looking for? What do I need? I've been on amazon and the prices are just so varied. I have no clue how to discern quality or need. Any recommendations? Help, please

Well, I am no expert, but I can tell you what we have that works just fine for us.
Belkin Wireless Router
I see that there are newer models for the same price. We got ours at Best Buy several years ago and it has been all we needed. It is hooked up in my upstairs bedroom and we get coverage through the entire house just fine, including three computers, an XBox, a Kindle and a Nook.
I just don't think regular folks need anything more than a basic one such as this.
Hope that helps.

I walked into Office Depot. Told them what I wanted, how many rooms we had and how we used our internet connection (no gaming but yes to everything else). They made a recommendation and I bought it...about $80. Now I'm sure I might have found a better deal online but not having to do the research etc. made that "extra" $10 worth it to me.

I was particularly looking at this brand. Good to know it's worked well for you. There are so many across the board reviews on these things, I just couldn't decide
I was also hoping not to spend so much on one (or pay the sales tax), but you're right Susan it is easier to probably go into an electronic store and just ask
Hmm...decisions, decisions. Thanks for the input

We have a Linksys. My husband's colleague, a computer expert on campus, recommended this brand.

Pretty much any of them are going to be good. Figure on paying roughly $70-80 (that seems to the range for typical home use). Anything less than that, I'd be questioning.

I have always used ones less expensive than that and had no problems.
I bought this TP Link router back in Oct and have had no problems with it. It was easy to set up and works very well.

This is what the computer guys that dh manages like as well. We ended up getting FIOS, which comes with its own router, but that is what we were looking at to replace ours.

Thanks for all the advice. We finally went with the Belkin N600 and are very pleased so far. It took me a while to get our modem to connect with it but since it did three weeks ago we've had no connection issues.
