What are your favorite brands? We don't get lots of snow, but when we do, the boots will be put to good use. We had Lands' End Snow Flurry Boots the last time we bought and were extremely disappointed. I will not buy them again.
Looking at LLBean and Lands End for ideas. We have only had one pair with a liner, and wasn't thrilled with that. Just want boots that are easy to put on and off, stay dry and warm, and not too expensive. Too much to ask?

Just to add, I'm looking at LE Snow Pack Boots and LLB Northwoods or Ultrawarm. I do worry that that "ultrawarm" in the south might be too much.
Also, would you buy 2 sizes bigger for your boys in boots? Ds is measuring at 13. I'm leaning towards getting a 2 to last 2 years if he doesn't have a huge growth spurt.

I definitely do this. I only buy snow boots every other year and I try to buy two sizes up. I get really thick socks for the first year. It works just fine once the boys are over about 5 (it is too difficult for the littler ones to navigate in oversized boots and there is a lot of falling down).
We weren't happy with the LLBean boots, either. I think my 10 yr-old son's favorite snow boots were purchased at Walmart! I really thought the LLBean boots would be warmer than they were.

Just have a minute, and need to give the caveat that we don't get regular snow here, just every now and then snow. Although last year we had 11" for Christmas!! 
I get the best bang for my buck by purchasing mud boots in a half size too big. These are found inexpensively at Walmart, Target or Tractor Supply. Then, I buy each child one pair of warm, wool socks or, another favorite we've discovered are Polartec socks (I've thought about layering a couple of pairs and think it would mimic a snow-boot liner well). The mud boots and warm socks can be used all season long for outdoor wear, and they are paired together for a snow. Instead of purchasing snow boots, I buy snow pants or snow suits which come down over the top of the boot, and I can usually pick up at the thrift store. As long as these are layered well with the boots, the kids feet stay reasonably warm and dry while they're playing.
We've had one pair of Lands End snow boots that have made it through all 4 kids and I love them, but I don't think that pair does any better than the regular mud-boot/warm sock approach which I get a lot more mileage out of for my buck. I know that's not exactly a good answer to your question, but thought I'd chime in as someone that has only every now and then snow.

We use rubber boots (like Wellies but not the brand name) and they have lasted for years --I just keep passing them down to littler kids. With some warm socks (we like wool) they work very well and are easy on and off.

It's COLD here and we usually find that the good quality name brands like Columbia and I'm blanking on some of the other names right now. really do last longer and work better than others. Also defiately get velcro closures, pullon, strings that tighten down with just the pull lock thing.. anything that ties is way to difficult for kids when their hands are cold.

I agree with the Wellie/sock approach, but we do have a pair of these that have lasted well.

We have lots of snow and my kids need boots that they can wear daily for months on end. We have these from LL Bean in every other size in neutral colors. Even though they have liners that has worked in our favor- when they get wet we can actually remove the liner and let them dry out thoroughly, which we could never do with other boots. We have rarely had the liners come back and I have never struggled to put them back in.
We also have the toddler version in several sizes, again in neutral colors. Three of my kids have worn some of these and they still look like new.
We used to get handmedown boots or buy locally but after several pair that didn't actually keep the kids feet warm, leaked, and never dried my mom bought us these and we have never, ever looked back. They are excellent.

I am a big fan of Kamik brand snow boots. They are rated to 40 below and keep the kids feet warm even in Fairbanks. They are lightweight, but tough and last long enough to be handed down at least once.
I like that the liner is removable (for easy airing out)so you can use them also as rain boots in the summer.

I was looking at the Kamik at REI and wondered about them..actually looking at the Snowkone for my region. Anyone have experience?
How about BOGS? I just ordered some of these for myself. This is a good sale price.
Trying to make a decision between these two, or the NorthWoods.
I hate making decisions and spending money.

Those Bogs are pretty popular around here, where it isn't as bitterly cold as Fairbanks, but more slushy and wet. I haven't had any, but as I said, folks here seem to like them a lot.
Those Snowkone boots look perfect for your region as well. I'm sure either ones would be very serviceable.

*I* have Kamiks. They are great. Mine are the super feminine attractive ones seen here. For a long time they were the only boots I had, and I had to wear them everywhere. It got embarrassing. Then I got some "town boots" from LL Bean, a nice ankle boot that is still waterproof but not nearly so.... clunky. My Kamiks are still the go-to boot for the yard, though. DH has a matching pair.

I like those, Krista! I'm so not the super feminine snow bunny. I like plain, not chunky, not Ugg style, no bright colors or white snow boots. I'm just a Plain Jane.

Kamiks or Sorels do the job here- it is VEEEEEEERY cold and the kids where them exactly half the year (and I have passed down one pair of Kamiks through all 4 kids and they each wore them for 2 years!)
