Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I was at a retreat this weekend and went to adoration afterward with a 23 year old woman. While we were there, she got a call to religious life. She actually saw the Sacred heart of Jesus beating in the host! She is very excited to begin this journey, but doesn't know where she will end up yet. Her parents are NOT excited. I would love to buy her a little gift as a congratulation. I would love to hear some ideas!!!

That is exciting! It's such a long journey -- she hears the call, but now has to figure out what it will look like -- what charism, what apostolate, which order?

If it's just a little gift, I'd highly recommend any of the books by Mother Mary Francis. She was a Poor Clare Nun. Right to be Merry tells about her vocation -- quite funny in parts. All her books were either about the religious life in her monastery, or talks given to her sisters. I find all her books highly relevant to me, even though I'm a layperson. They are just wonderful.

An out-of-print book, but delightful for those discerning is Shepherd's Tartan by Sister Mary Jean Dorcy, OP, a Dominican nun. I've been a huge fan ever since I was 13 when I bought a copy in the back of our church. Delightful reading, lots of humor, but also food for thought.

Both books were written pre-Vatican II, so some of the process of becoming a nun has changed, but not altogether. I joined the convent briefly when I was younger and found quite a few similarities.

Other ideas would be more spiritual reading, a small icon or statue, perhaps a rosary or tenner with the Sacred Heart? I know Ruth has a tenner, and other rosaries and bracelets in carnelian that would remind this young woman of her moving experience.

How interesting...one of the moms in our parish saw a similar vision not too long ago, while praying for her college-age child at Adoration. I wonder how common this experience might be?

For your friend, certainly spiritual reading would be an excellent choice, or perhaps a biography of St. Margaret Mary Alacoque.

A spiritual bouquet is also a nice gift - a gift of time and prayer that doesn't cost money. It sounds as though this young woman will need a lot of prayerful support as she discerns her next steps. You are a sweet person to think of her at this important time in her life!

Lovely suggestions!

When I was discerning and entered a monastery, I received a Bible from my church/priest, and a handmade cross from the CWL. :D It was so special that they thought of doing that. It was just so nice to know that others cared and were praying for me.
