My oldest is named John Paul. Obviously, he was named after the pope (he was born a year and a day after he died). He is also named after both grandfathers (one is John, the other is Paul).
Dominic Michael is named after St Dominic and Michael the archangel (also my husband's middle name is Michael).
Meredith Rose is named that because we loved the name. Rose was my grandma's middle name. She is really upset that she isn't named after a saint. Is there a Saint Meredith that I am unaware of??? Did I make a mistake here? She seriously brings this up a lot. It is like an offense to her.

Well, you could look for a Saint Meredith for her. Also, roses represent Mary and people often use that name as a substitute for Mary. I have a girl who is the only child without a saint or Biblical person for a first name. She got over it. She's 10 now and she's happy with her saintly middle name.
God Bless,
Anita

Rose is one of the titles of the Blessed Mother.... Mystical Rose from the Litany of Loreto is one I can come up with off the top of my head.
I don't think you can get more saintly than that!

Yes- St. Rose of Lima. A King Kong of saints!
Does she think it doesn't count if it's not her first name? I would count it.
ETA: and good news! She can pick her very own saint's name at confirmation time. She is not shut out!

well there is a St. Meredith
But does she know that Meredith is both a boys and a girls name.. mainly used as a girls name now in the USA but still used for a boys name in Wales. You may be trading one problem for another if having her name be a boys name will be a problem since St Meredith is a boy.

Oh and I doubt it's a mistake.. but you may find that you're talking more about the boys' names being saint names.. is there something you can talk about your daughter's name.. why did you love it? did you read it somewhere special? have you known about wanting to use it for a long time.. whatever is special about the name.
I've been "whispering" in my oldest girl's ear for a long time about how pretty her dark hair is.. difficult when the other girls are all more blonde (though one is darkening up).. and how nice it is to here her now liking her dark hair with the copper red highlights (her hair is too dark for her to have gold highlights).
so spending some time making a point to tell her about why her name is special or why you like it, will probaby go a long way to helping her over the percieved short comings.

In the old Welsh, Meredith means 'great lord.' Now, they were speaking of God or Jesus, but it's a great connection anyway! Jesus is the greatest Lord and Rose is another name for Mary.
My oldest doesn't like his middle name. It's not a saint's name or family name, just a name we liked. He's learned to accept it.

My youngest's middle name is Gabriel and he is disappointed that it wasn't Michael like his next brother up. He thinks a warrior angel would be a better personality fit for him Can't find a sword emoticon! But he's learning to love the archangel name that he got, especially when I explain he was conceived around the time of the Annunciation and that we thought he would need special patronage since he was born ill like his older brother.
I was thinking Rose of Lima, too. That's a great saint and there is also the association to the Rosary and to Our Lady, as others mentioned!

My second daughter's middle name is also Rose:-)
She loves having St. Rose of Lima as her name saint.
I'm just waiting until my son realizes that Storey is an somewhat unusual middle name (his dad's middle name is Landcaster)

- does that help?
Kristin, I'm sorry to hear you are having this difficulty. Four year olds can be pretty indignant, can't they? You certainly did not make a mistake. For whatever reason that is the name she was meant to have and it is indeed a beautiful name. There is a dear member of this board named Meredith, though she doesn't drop in much these days - maybe she will drop in to comment on having the name and the saint topic.
Many girls have patron saints from their names that are male instead of female. Michelle is St. Michael, Lauren is St. Lawrence, Gabrielle is Gabriel, They are female names derived from the masculine - just as names like Shannon, Kelly, Ashley, Meredith historically were male, they are now generally female names. So it's cool that there is indeed a St. Meredith, though osbscure (and you're not likely to find any holy cards or statues ) is also unique and that could be emphasized.
There are many Rose connections to saints as you have seen in this thread. St. Rose of Lima is the one I thought of first, also. And the connections to Our Lady under the titles Our Lady of the Rosary, Rose of Sharon and Mystical Rose, etc. tie in so beautifully. I will also add that a number of the young Roses we know are named for St. Therese (Little Flower, Shower of Roses). I would say there are so many beautiful directions to take this. Hopefully one fits your daughter and could be guided that way - that she could take as her patron. The other thing I was thinking is that the name Meredith to me always connotes a form of Mary - I know that the derivation of the name doesn't have a similar root - but phonetically, by sound there is a similarity. I could see taking Meredith from Mary.
In general many girls names are not specifically saints names but variations of them or of Marian titles or feasts. There are far fewer female saints in the halography and fewer different names among them (Probably half of the female saints are Mary/Maria, Elizabeth, Margaret or forms of them ), so if we relied only on common female saint names, our girls would not have a lot of name choices to go around.
My daughter's name is an Old Testament name so not a saint per se and her middle name is an ethnic form of Mary but wouldn't necessarily be recognized as that.
In days passed, canon law did require that a child be given a saint's name at baptism. The current code (Canon 855) states only that "Parents, sponsors and parish priests are to take care that a name is not given which is foreign to Christian sentiment." It is certainly encouraged that all children have a baptismal name that gives them patronage of a saint - someone to look to as a model and intercessor.
And as mentioned, at confirmation she can pick any saint she wants to add to her partonage...

Kristen,
I had to smile when I read this thread because I always dealt with the fact that I did not have a saint name. My brother was named after one of the Archangels and my sister after our Lady but my first name was made up, (literally, it is the first 2 letters of my Dad's name and the last 4 letters of my Mom's). Mimi is a nickname
BUT.... my middle name is Pilar after Our Lady and where I was born and baptized.
My parents always made a HUGE deal on my feast day of Our Lady of the Pilar so maybe, like stated above, could chose a St. Rose or Marian feast day to celebrate.
ETA: I was just thinking that I always had a very hard time with my name. It is very difficult to say in English and I was teased for it BUT my great uncle explained to me when I was about 10, WHY I was named what I was.
The story goes that I was my maternal grandmother's first grandchild and in their family that first grandchild was named something to honor that grandmother. The last 4 letters of my name, well they are the last four letters of my Mom's name but also the FIRST 4 letters of my grandmother's name! I thought that was so cool so maybe as your daughter gets older she will come to appreciate, the story behind the name.

I used to give grief to my mother for my name. I would scour books to find a patron saint for "Jennifer". Usually it would be a form of "John". Sometimes it would say Joan, which is a form of John. My sister Jessica had the same derivatives, which frustrated her, too.
Joan Windham was the only one that I put St. Genevieve as a form of Jennifer, so I latched on to that.
I know my frustration was two-fold -- it was a super popular name, and I had no name day nor was there a saint's feast on my birthday. I was 2 1/2 hours away from St. Patrick's day, and she didn't name me Patricia.
That's just say, I feel her pain. But Rose encompasses two patron saints, Rose of Viterbo and Rose of Lima, both fabulous saints. Plus, my FAVORITE title of Mary in the Litany is "Mystical Rose".

Oh, and she could TOTALLY choose to have St. Therese the Little Flower as her patron saint, too, because of the Rose name.
Sometimes it's nicer to pick your patron saint?
