Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

A school system in the next county over from us is starting a program of Chinese Immersion (I'm not sure I'm spelling that correctly! ). I'm not really sure that's the official name but that is how my DH described it. He said there are teachers who have been hired from China that have come to teach at one of the schools. This year they will teach the preschoolers, then they will add the kindergarten, then first grade, etc. They will only speak Chinese, and the children will learn the language, as well as being taught the math.
My DH and I were just talking about it. He thinks it's a great idea. I'm just not sure how it will work. Maybe I'm too set in my ways.
I'm just wondering if anyone has heard of this and what your thoughts are.

Becky,

I taught in a Spanish Immersion program in Minnesota. They also have Chinese (Mandarin), French and Italian. The whole concept is that children will naturally learn their "home" language but this gives them a head up on the second language. When I taught, the children would only learn the second language for the first 3 years (k,1 and 2) and then starting in 3rd grade they learn their home language. It is extremely effective and a lot of my students went on to be very fluent.

I taught 4th grade and LOVED my experience. I would be happy to answer any specifics but if they offered the program here, I would have jumped on it!
