I have made a huge effort over the past several months to learn more about my faith and to do a lot of spiritual reading and prayer. I have started to see a lot of great differences in myself (although I have a LONG way to go ). Anyway, I have been kind of shocked because things that I used to enjoy (movies, TV shows, music) no longer have any appeal to me. I just feel like almost all of it is just trash and unwatchable (even some of my favorite shows).
I would love it if someone could recommend some quality media that I would actually enjoy (movies, music, TV, whatever). I have been listening to a lot of Catholic music and love it (it even helps me get through my housework with a smile on my face). If the TV is on, it is usually on EWTN because I do enjoy watching that.

On the music front, you might consider rediscovering classical, jazz, blues, bluegrass, a capella singing, barbershop...
There's a lot of great music out there, much of which is truly American in origin, that is worth listening to.
If time permits, try to find a free concert at a family-friendly event (maybe this Independence Day weekend?) and see how your family likes the concert. You could go on a musical discovery journey together!

I do love classical music and listen to that. I am a violinist. Maybe I could play that more around the house. That is definitely good for kids to hear more of!

Plus, it ties in well to sacred music...
...and then there's the whole WV music heritage thing...bluegrass, folk, Celtic...one of my dreams is to go to Augusta Heritage in Elkins some year, preferably during Celtic Week!

She's quite beautiful!
Adding - Kari Jobe. Not Catholic but certainly Christian, and nothing contradictory to the Catholic faith on her album, *Kari Jobe*. Really, many of the songs are quite affirming of our Catholic faith and I like them a lot. Very peaceful and beautiful! If you like Audrey Assad, you'll love Kari Jobe.

There was a thread on Catholic movies available on Netflix: http://4real.thenetsmith.com/forum_posts.asp?TID=36096&KW=ne tflix
I hope this runs long and gets updated frequently!

The Woodhouse Band
is a Catholic family that plays irish and folk music. They perform a few times a year in VA and have only the 1 cd out. I've seen them a handful of times over the years.

In addition to all the specific suggestions for Catholic content, this might be a great time to look for excellence in a new area. For example, I watch baseball and some sports television with my boys. I find some shows to be very informative and interesting + it helps me to build strong relationships with my boys...and with others in general.
Quote:
Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable--if anything is excellent or praiseworthy--think about such things. Phillipians 4:8 |
|
|
ETA: Watching excellence leads to many discussions about character formation, virtues, salvation of souls, and other topics integrated from our faith.
Love,
