I have a rather strange question and I'm wondering if anyone here might have the answer...
Each day when I turn on my computer the MSN page comes up and there are always pictures and news from the terrible tradgedies in Japan right now. I notice, in most of the pictures, there is usually at least one adult with a face mask on. But, there are also children pictured, none of whom are wearing a face mask. Why is that? Do children not need them? Maybe they just don't keep them on? Is it unrelated to the nuclear or earthquake problems and it's just a lot of people with the flu? I'm trying to figure it out!

I have no idea myself, but the photos of the children might not be from the areas affected by the nuclear reactors; while the photos of the adults in masks are very likely from those areas.

My guess is that they are rescue workers or medical workers that have been provided the masks because of the likelihood of disease and contamination there right now. It's not that the children don't need them, they probably do!! But, my guess is that they're providing them to rescue workers...sort of like on an airplane when they instruct you to put your oxygen mask on before helping someone next to you. In order to be ensure and protect the health of the rescue workers, they've likely been provided these masks.
That's just a guess though.

My guess would have been the same as Jen's.
Also, I try and remember that photographers can create a bias in the pictures they choose to take and the newpapers in the pictures they choose to show. What might either or both be trying to say by showing those particular photos? and is it really the norm.

It is very common in asian countries for people who have colds to wear masks. This is considered a duty in order to prevent the spread of germs to others (at least that is what my Japanese doctor said). It could also be used to protect from germs as well (I have seen immune compromised individuals in the states wear them too).

I thought it was because the kids wouldn't wear them. The photos I noticed they were toddlers.
I wondered the same thing!

Having struggled to keep them on my children, that was my first thought.
