Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I was cleaning and rearranging our book shelves just now, and I came across a very old book that was tucked away in my husband's college books. I have never noticed it before! It has his grandmother's name in it, and it is just lovely! It's titled The Flower Babies' Book verse by Anna M. Scott, Pictures by "Penny" Ross. The cover is very very faded, and the binding and spine are so decrepit that the pages are all loose. It's filled with short poems about each flower with a pretty drawing of a young girl's bust wearing each flower as a hat. I would love to somehow salvage this to pass down the family, but I'm afraid it may be unsalvageable at this point. The pages are all fine, but they will be lost if I leave it as it is.

No idea how to restore/rescue an old,old book. It sounds just lovely! Maybe someone at the public library knows of someone who restores books.

Peace,
Nancy

Hi. I know this probably isn't the answer you want, but I would actually remove each page and have it laminated with an extra inch or so on the left hand side. Then I would three-hole punch that side and put the whole thing in a comparably sized three ring binder.   Have your kids color a book cover and make fancy lettering for the binding. you've just made your own book! while you may not be able to sell it later on, it certainly will be pass-down-able.

You might want to see if there is a book restorer in your area. Even if you don't end up using them, they may be able to give you some good advice.

We have a friend that used to manage a copy company and he would take documents that had been destroyed by one means or another and scan them into a good copy machine, sometimes using the computer to enhance the scan and then rebind them in whatever form was needed...maybe you could try something like that?

I looked into professional restoration at one time and it was WAY out of our budget....so, I restored 2 very old books with clear, heavy duty book repair tape.

We discussed it on a this book repair thread and I shared pics and links.

I wonder if your local librarians might have some tips? They also have catalogs (like Demco) that might have the supplies you need to restore a book.

ETA: Here's the link to Demco, just for completeness sake!

Ditto, I was going to recommend the tape too.

I have a sister in law who does book repairs for her local library. SHe's in CA. I don't know if she could do something like what you are talking about, but if you'd like, I could contact her and see?
