Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My almost-teen dd is interested in taking up martial arts this summer when piano lessons end. She studied shorin-ryu karate (Okinawan-style) many years ago but that's not available here. She knows she must start at the beginning with a new style of martial arts and is good with that.

We're wondering what would be best for her - she is a dancer, so risking physical injury (e.g. throws) might not be a good idea.

If you or your dc study martial arts, I'd love to learn more about your experiences. (And, if you're in Maryland, PM me if you really love your dojo!)

Thanks!

Why is she wanting to do a martial arts? I mean is she looking for the form and discipline or the self defense or...?

I think I remember Tai Chi being more about the movement and self discipline than about the "fighting"

Some self defense, some just due to her interest in Asian culture...she's a very physically-active person, so something slow and deliberate (e.g. yoga, not that I have suggested that) would not appeal to her.

American Kenpo might be a good choice. It tends to be practical, fast, and street smart, which we have found to be good for self-defense.

Love,
