Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hello and Happy Advent!

I am coordinating a mini-retreat this Saturday (Dec. 4) for the moms in our homeschooling group.

We will have Mass, breakfast, a talk by a wonderful Miles Christi priest, some small group sharing, an Advent presentation, hymns/singing, and close with a Rosary.

My tired brain doesn't want to do a lot of searching and thought you all will point me in the right direction.

What I am looking for is:

- prayers, litanies, etc., specifically for homeschooling moms

- inspirational quotes or scripture that would speak to hsing moms

- songs that may inspire hsing moms (I think a few of Marie Bellet's will work)

- inexpensive, but meaningful gift ideas

************************************

Update/thanks below.

bumping this up......

I am thinking, Erica!

But...it seems to me you have a good plan!

Are these other things for sending home in a packet?

Wish I could come, too!

Erica,

I just finished an Advent retreat for littles, but your search for hymns I thought I'd share these:

O Come Emmanuel

Story of Redemption for Children, in particular the Annunciation and Trip to Bethlehem. These are sung to the tune of Creator alme Siderum.

Both of these are haunting, simple melodies, and the text paint the longing and preparation. Plus it does double duty, because it can be taken home and sung with the children.

Jennifer, Thank you for sharing the pdf file for O Come, Emmanuel. I was going to use that as our "study" hymn this Advent, but hadn't gotten around to typing up the words. How much nicer is your lovely version with the O Antiphon symbols! So glad you shared that!

I like Audrey Assad too. She's Catholic. Her song Restless would work well for your purposes I think. Show Me is another favorite. I love all her songs really.

Taking My Time is a good mom song. I remember we used it at a Mother's Group years ago.

Bookmarks, holy cards, tea cup (dollar store has some pretty ones).

There is a lovely Novena for Homeschooling Mothers that is adapted from one of my favorite prayer books,Mother Love, A Manual for Christian Mothers by Pius Franciscus OFM, Cap. Perhaps you could use one of the prayers at the retreat and have copies of the novena for the mothers to take home.

The retreat sounds wonderful! I'm with Chari-I wish I could come too!

Blessings,
Kym

Sorry, for not jumping right in...I'm better with the workshop/conference planning than retreats .

Michele mentioned a tea cup as a gift idea - and I know you can get tea/coffee cups cheap at dollar store, but if you are thinking even less expensive I was thinking tea bags. A lot times retreat gifts are those sorts of pampering things. The tea bags could be personalized for the season/theme: Themed tea bags

I love Make-it & Take-it type gifts. It's fun to leave with something that could be used during the Advent season. It could be something they make there, or just the supplies to take home and make.

Ideas:
~Paper "O Antiphon" House - I linked some downloadable parts here in this thread.
~St. Lucy's Wheat kit - wheat berries, potting soil (with or without pot - could just take it home)
~Votive candle (Immaculate Conception, OLoGuadalupe, etc.) - small voitves can often be found at craft store at discount, modge podge a small saint image on, decorate around image edges with sequins or glitter.
~"Baby Jesus Manger" kit - lots of different styles could be adapted from ones at Catholic Icing
~St. Nick's bead candy cane kits - Or any of the St. Nicholas crafts from St. Nicholas Center

These are a few of the types of make it gifts I was thinking of. Could think of others if needed - just brainstorming...

Just jumping in to say how much I love Audrey Assad as well! Beautiful!!!! I'm not sure if she has CD's though...she may have only released a digital album on itunes. Still...she's a favorite of mine...and my daughter!!

Oh my goodness!

I will come back later and read and click on all of the links, but I wanted to say a quick THANK YOU for all of your suggestions!!!!!

I'm planning and running the retreat, but I really need it myself. I can't tell you how helpful this is to me to have this information in one place and I plan to click and print and copy and then get my much more technologically-minded teens to download those songs. :)

God bless you all.

I have this quote handy

Quote:
"How can it be a large career to tell other people's children about the Rule of Three, and a small career to tell one's own children about the universe?
How can it be broad to be the same thing to everyone, and narrow to be everything to someone? No. A woman's function is laborious, but because it is gigantic, not because it is minute. I will pity Mrs. Jones for the hugeness of her task; I will never pity her for its smallness." ~G.K Chesterson

THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!

I love this forum and I love you gals!

Our retreat was a beautiful success.

I think I used all of your wonderful ideas.

Jodie - I put that quote on the back of the program which was filled with other quotes, lyrics, prayers and other inspirations.

Jenn - We sang O Come Emmanuel at Mass and I was glad to have the words for the program.

Kym - The Novena was beautiful! I made copies and used ribbon to bind it and gave it as a gift at the end. I wonder if it could be used here somehow - we could all pray it together. It is awesome!

Mary - Totally made the themed tea bags! I will say it was a bit of work (I made 5 for each mom and put them in a clear bag tied with a ribbon), but my kids helped me and they came out so pretty. I used 5 different images of Mary because we call our group, Daughters of Our Lady. So, so pretty. Sent those home as a gift as well.

Michele - I am IN LOVE with Audrey Assad!!! I must have spent an hour (or more!) listening to her songs on You Tube. Restless was our theme song. I also used Ought To Be because it makes me think of my kids (I've been singing it to them since). Marie Bellet's Mother You Are Worried was another one I used. Everyone was crying at the end. :)

Oh, and Jen, there are CDs!! I bought a bunch for Christmas presents. Audrey Assad

Everything was lavendar/purple, pink and white (for Advent) and we had an amazing spread of food and a heavenly coffee/tea/hot chocolate bar.

Father Patrick, MC gave a powerful yet humorous talk on the vocation of a homeschooling mother. Those priests are gifted!

So, THANK YOU again for your wonderful, lovely ideas. You made it easy for me to do this for our group.

I would be happy to share the program I put together. It's three pages front and back folded to make a little book done in Power Point.

God bless you!
