Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We haven't sent Christmas cards in ages, but I keep hoping...

Anyway... I wasn't a popular kid and have always been passive in social situations, waiting for someone to signal I was acceptable to them before trying to interact. Of course I've gotten over this somewhat as an adult, but realized I was assuming that if we're not on somebody's Christmas card list we can reasonably guess sends Christmas cards, we should take a hint from that. But somebody has to send them first, right?

I still have this ridiculously 7th-grade imagination of people getting cards and saying, "Huh? Who? Oh, that loser. Is she trying to get onto my card list or something? *snort*" Of course, the people I am dealing with are devout Catholic homeschooling group types, so that may be a bit unrealistic.

So, I don't know. Am I overthinking things again, or does anybody have any pointers for "sending Christmas cards to people who definitely know who you are but you wouldn't quite call friends and who have never sent you cards?" I wasn't thinking of the "here's a picture of our family" type cards. Should they be sent on the early side so if someone is the type to feel guilty (I know these exist, it's not that I think they should!) they can send you one, or on the late side so they don't have to feel guilty that they don't want to go out and buy more cards if they don't happen to have one around?

I wonder if the picture-of-our-family card style has actually decreased the likelihood of getting cards from people who aren't already exactly in your circle, or more distant relatives. Or maybe they're significantly more expensive than the box of non-personalized cards? I don't know about the expense, but I would feel a lot more presumptuous sending a family portrait out of the blue to people whose friend I'm really not quite (yet?), than something that was a Christmas greeting only.

I have just been trying to think of good ways to be more sociable. I don't drive so simply showing up at things more often is hard. And money and time are in short supply right now.

Think how happy getting a Christmas card makes you.. and imagine.. how thrilled someone would be to recieve a card even if they don't know you well.

Then, send cards to whoever you want to say "hey I thought of you" to.

Jodie said it so well! Think of how wonderful it is to receive a lovely card - a simple, yet so very touching gesture of Christmas spirit and kindness. Give, and you will receive .

Just seeing this, Theresa, and I just wanted to add that your thought process sounds just like mine most of the time. I often wish I were a bit less of a melancholic.

I agree with everyone else: send as you please, without worrying about the thoughts of the recipients. I would love to get a card from someone I just considered an acquaintance--realistically, I doubt anyone would ever be offended by a Christmas card (as much as I may worry they might!).
