I just got off the phone scheduling the class and baptism.
What is the average number of Baptisms your parish has performed at once?
I was just told hopefully my little one could be fit in because the deacon already has 5 to do.  I decided not to go with the gentle hint of waiting or it being a problem because Anthony's baptism has been put off for one reason after another. I. don't. want. to wait. any longer!
Just wondering if I'm being a burden by having our deacon baptise a sixth child this weekend?

What a joy and a blessing that so many precious souls are entering into the Family of God! I would approach your dear son's Baptism with that in mind and trust the deacon shares your enthusiasm and joy...after all, that is part of his vocation! Welcome, in advance, to the Church little Anthony!

From what I can tell, my current parish tends to have about two or three babies baptized after mass almost every Sunday (a small table with candles and garments is prepared before Mass so that it's easy to tell).
In a previous parish they would have a mass baptism once a month rather then every Sunday and half a dozen babies or more would be normal.
I think that a large part of the difference between the two parishes is that my current parish has two priests (plus a retired priest who lends a hand occasionally) while the previous parish had one priest. This means that there is less need to batch baptize.

We went to the class last night and just as Servant wrote, our Deacon was very happy to see us. I felt nothing but joy from him. After Sunday, Deacon will have baptized 4 of our 5 children.
If I would have listened to the gentle hint, Anthony wouldn't have been baptized until the end of January. Our parish has baptisms the last Sunday of the month. Not during Lent (when he was born) and not Advent...so none in November and December. It's our last chance before another long wait.

What a joyful time Michaela. This thread reminds me that we need to get ours scheduled. (We have to plan way in advance.)
Can I hi-jack to ask a quick question? All our baptisms are done during the Mass. Is there a change taking place that baptisms are done after Mass now, or are we just different? (We do have a history of being a liberal diocese).

I think it's a matter of logistics as much as anything else.
Relatively few baptisms, it makes sense to have them during Sunday Mass - just as adults during Vigil Mass.
If there are a fair amount of baptisms then it becomes unwieldy to have them during Mass.

I think it's partially logistics, but also preference by the celebrant. Our first child was born when DH was still in grad school & he was baptized before Mass at the Catholic Center on campus, then we had a private baptism on a Saturday afternoon at our new church for our second child, and our youngest two were baptized during Mass at yet another church!  #3 was with one other child, #4 was with three others. It's fun to keep their churches of record straight in my brain!

It must depend on the parish.
Our sister parish has a schedule for the baptisms printed in the church bulliten. The dates/times are not during Mass and there is a little note under the schedule that says there will NOT be other baptisms unless it's an emergency and family coming from out of town or scheduling conflicts aren't considered an emergency.
Our home parish only does baptisms the 4th weekend of the month. It used to be during Mass, but recently changed.

Becky it just depends on the parish.. the bigger ones we've attended have had Baptism outside the Mass.. while the smaller parishes have them during Mass. So only 2 of our children have been baptised without it being during a Mass.. and both those were larger parishes.. one was in my ILs parish at that time.. a small town and all the rest in our current small town.
Oh but one of the "big" parishes still did all the adult baptisms and confirmations during the Easter Vigil.

Thanks ladies! I was just curious. Either way it is such a joyful event. I don't always like being in front of the congregation during baptisms during the Mass, but that has nothing to do with the actual baptism, that's just my own insecurity.
