We were able to get the weekend we hoped for for the baptism.. working around everyone's schedules.. including the fact that it's the first Sunday that our "new" priest will be here. He was here for about 4 yrs then gone for 3 yrs and is coming back so we all know him and he knows us.
We'll host a bbq here after Mass on Sunday. I've been buying and freezing various sausages to do a bbq with at some point.. and it will be October.. so I'm thinking we'll do an oktoberfest theme and have bbq sausages with buns for the main dish..
It looks like the weather will be nice but cooler (upper 60's low 70's) so bbqing won't be a problem..
What side dishes would you serve?? I'd want things that could be made ahead mostly so that it's simple to set out on that day. I have lots of help for the cooking between my dh and kids (several love to cook and the 13 yr old can make almost anything I can do)

When I think "Octoberfest" I think beer (may or may not be appropriate), sauerkraut and pretzels! As for sauerkraut I am big fan of my homemake but enjoy Bubbies in a pinch. Snyder's Sourdough are our favorite pretzels.

You mentioned freezing sausages, so how about this Slow Cooker Recipe or these very yummy looking Fall Cupcakes.

I wish more of us liked german potato salad but I'm really wanting it a bit different than typical bbq fare.
definately saurkraut.. can't have sausages without it
hmm pretzals.. hadn't thought of pretzals..
I'm thinking about doing a big apple crisp in my electric roaster for dessert.. we have birthdays in the weeks before and after so we'll be getting plenty of cake
so many here love mashed potatoes with sausage and saurkraut.. would it be too weird to serve mashed potatoes with sausages in buns? I could keep them warm in a crockpot.

I don't think mashed potatoes would be weird. You could add bacon crumbles to give it that German potato salad flair. Or what about a potato casserole with bacon?

How about a Rice salad, and would your dd be capable of making a green/garden salad that morning?

My German friends have been known to serve mashed potatoes from time to time... Apple crisp (apple anything) is very German, too.
A green salad (esp. with a few darker leafy greens, like mache or spinach) fits in as well. German salad dressings tend to be the oil/vinegar/herbs types. (I could send you some imported dressing packets...just add O & V...PM me! - You could make one "authentic" dressing as well as put out ranch, Italian, etc.)
My children love to visit our German friends at mealtime (!) because of the freshness of the foods they serve - nothing is super-complicated, but the flavors are distinctive and complementary (sauerkraut, sausage, potato, green salad, fruit, cake...). It's really about the friendly hospitality, satisfying portions and happy atmosphere. I think your plan sounds both tasty and authentic.
Wish I lived closer...I'd show up with kaesespaetzle (from Baden-Wuerttemberg, where our friends live) or choucroute garnie (from my ancestral homeland, Alsace)...
