Yesterday our family made a spur-of-the-moment treck to DC and visited the American History museum.
As I was in the exhibits of pop-up books (which is incredible), we overheard a mother telling her group, "No, just skip it. It's just books."
And she reiterated that a few times "It's just books."
We were laughing that that was like a stab in the heart, and then she kept twisting it every time she said it!
"Just books" -- no way. Books are everything!

O my!!  That makes me so sad! I take that remark personally... books come in third for me... right after God and family! And pop-up books? Such a labor of love, spurned by the ignorant... lol

Unbelievable!!!!! I'm sure they all had their Ipods, MP3s, cell phones, laptops, Nintendos, game boys etc. for their use back at the house and/or hotel.

Oh, how sad.
I lingered over the first edition L. M. Montgomery books exhibited in tiny museums on Prince Edward Island...all the Anne of Green Gables books, in many languages...I couldn't touch them but I was right next to them! Amazing.
We met an Italian couple who'd come all the way to PEI just to see all the Anne places...the books have been translated into dozens of languages and people plan vacations around the places L. M. Montgomery lived and wrote about.
Then there are holy books - the Book of Kells, what an amazing sight! Each page is a singular, detailed work of art. (It is very small, much smaller than I'd imagined.)
I'm so thankful we have museums and libraries and archives so that we can preserve the most important books and documents from our past. It's really thrilling to see the Declaration of Independence at the National Archives in DC, or the Magna Carta, or any of Shakespeare's folios, or a Gutenberg Bible. How amazing that simple pen strokes and printed pages can change the way we see ourselves forever!
No, it's never, ever "just books" at my house.

Ouch! And, salt in the wounds as well. It's like going to the library and hearing "No books today". Well, why not?

My dh and I love to look at the books wherever we go. I just have a hard time convincing him that picture books are "real books" too!  It can be frustrating when the younger kids are looking at museum gift shop books and he rushes them along as though it's not worthy of our time. I keep working on him though. He tells me he never really read books until he was an adult. (Except for what he had to read for school.)
It really helped this past Christmas when he found out his favorite sister, who is an artist, collects pop up books. He was surprised at first but the more we looked for one to get for her, the more he started to appreciate them.
