Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I feel the need to change some habits. I can't remember the last time I took my vitamins (having the handy daily Sun.-Sat. case for them hasn't made me do it) or exercised. I went upstairs three times in a row Sun. night and was out of breath and my heart felt like it was going to beat out of my chest! I am not considered overweight, but I could stand to lose about 20 or at least convert it to muscle. I know being in shape is not about vanity but about being healthy. I'll be 39 in a couple of weeks (on my 12th anniversary!), and I need to finally develop some better health habits. I have given up candy and sodas for Lent, so that's a start. My other resolution is to have a mammogram done (never had one) and go for my yearly ob appt (which I haven't done in two years). Anyone else out there needing a change? How do you go about getting exercise in?

Dear Courtney,

I'm no expert but you will need to think about and find some physical activity you enjoy then do it often. Can you play active games with your kids? Can you take walks? I don't run (hate it) and have millions of other excuses for other exercises, but I have found one thing I like: the rebounder (mini trampoline). It's a real workout (mine came with a free exercise tape and the old lady on it is in great shape compared to me). Best of all I can do it 4 minutes at a time, stop, and then go back and do more later. (and the kids love it.) Also we have plans for a treadmill as I like walking but doing it with the kids, I don't get my heart rate up at all and I'm a wimp when it comes to imperfect weather.

As for food (and sugary drinks), make a list of changes needing to be made and pick one thing a month or one thing every two months and do those gradually.

You can do it!

Love,
Kelly in NC

Hi Courtney,
Good luck with your healthy resolutions! We're in the same boat and I just began exercising last week. I don't have any advice to offer, except that I tend to get things done when I'm held accountable for them, so maybe if we did more than just say, "I'm going to do it," we'd put more effort into taking better care of ourselves. As for what to do to be held accountable, I have no idea! I just know that I need to take better care of myself too. Can't wait to hear what others suggest!

I'm with y'all -- I really need to get in shape and get healthy. Today I just noticed MacBeth's tagline -- I don't know if it's been there for awhile or if I just noticed it:

Miss Mason walked every day...do you?

Kind of makes you feel guilty, huh?

Courtney,

I have radically changed my eating habits and am slowly changing my families(they are not as excited about this as I am).

I have had high cholesterol for years. I have been to several doctors, tried low fat diets with exercise and finally a non-statin drug, but could never get it to a good level.

I started praying hard, I'm about to turn 38, I really want to be healthy and avoid health problems I see my parents struggling with. ABout 7 weeks ago a friend gave me a book called Eat to Live by Dr. Joel Fuhrman. I read it an decided to give it a try for 7 weeks. I tested my cholesterol at the beginng- a whopping 233. I followed his eating plan and walked about every day. At the end of 7 weeks I took another test and it dropped 62 Point!!! And I lost 20 pounds!!!!!!

I'm a firm believer, I feel this is a start of a new healthy life for me and my family free of medication.

It is pretty much a vegan diet, but he doesn't rule out meat totally. I'm never hungary and I feel great.

He also wrote a book called Disease Proof Your Child, which has helped me also with my kids.

I feel this is a gift from God, a true answer to my prayers.

Peace to you,

Thank you all for your suggestions and encouragement. Our neighbor is out of town till Wed. and has asked us to walk their dog so I will definitely be walking the next few days!

The kids and I did go on a walk Tues. and I think we all benefited from it. I'm going to attempt to get up earlier and walk before the kids get up. I used to walk every day for about 2 years. I walked everyday of both my pregnancies as well! I really have no excuse now. It's amazing what it does for my mental outlook as well.

One thing that I have found that does hold me more accountable even though it sounds so simple is to write "exercise" down in my planner each day. If I see it writing several times a day, I'm more likely to do it.

I went grocery shopping yesterday and bought more vegetables and healthier snacks. I know from past experience, I just have to do it long enough to establish a new habit.

Jeanne, I looked at your book recommendation on Amazon. I'm going to see if the library has it.

Courtney, it's really important for me to get up early and make time for a workout every morning. I feel better about my day and better about myself. After several years of this routine it is now habit - like brushing my teeth!

When I had babies and toddlers I also had a PLan B and a Plan C workout time - so, if I couldn't get the early morning workout in, I had another time scheduled - typically an exercise video or weights or yoga during nap time ( Plan B) or a walk in the evening if dh was home ( Plan C).

Plan A remains the early a.m. workout.
