Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My husband and I have been considering taking over the Family Ministry program at our church. For the past 15 years or so there has not been very much if at all done with it. Except for an article, related to family life, showing up in the bulletin every Sunday or every other Sunday there is a family ministry in name only. My question to you wonderful ladies is how would we get started with activies and such? Any ideas? Suggestions for activies?

Do you have a family ministry at your church? If so, what do they do? how many times do they meet? etc???

Thank you,
JMJ

We haven't taken part in any family ministry, but I'm aware of parishes where they provide family catechesis...I think it's led by one of the the priests and offered between Masses or afterward. There are some excellent family catechesis programs available through the Apostolate for Family Consecration; www.familyland.org

One activity that I think would be fun is hosting a family movie night, with popcorn, etc.....and having some really great movie, like The Song of Bernadette, or something along those lines....

Our family life ministry has gotten really active over the last two years. Some of the things they do include... Blessing of the Animals on the Feast of St. Francis (people bring their pets to the schoolyard), All Saints Day costume party, family movie nights, May Crowning with the First Communicants processing, a Christmas pageant before the Chirstmas Eve mass, Three Kings Day procession, and blessing of backpacks before school begins in September. There is always something going on for families, so I am sure I've left things out. They pretty much follow the liturgical calendar and base activites on that.
There is also a twice monthly family mass where the children are addressed by the priest during the homily and a social time afterwards with coffee, juice and donuts.
