I just had to share how much my son is enjoying this.
He's loving the time with the older boys. They have a meeting area that let's them play games inside like dodge ball.. even has basketball hoops.
Alot of the time the newest boys are split off from the older boys so they can work on their rank requirements. But yesterday they were all working on knots so the older boys were working with the younger ones.
And my son loves knot tying. It was so funny to watch.. they have a contest on who can tie the bowline fastest. And apparently my son beat even the older boys.. a couple of times.. which was pretty funny because I think the one boy hadn't been beaten very often so it was funny to watch the surprise/delight of the boys that he was beaten (even he wasn't upset  )
I've been hanging around since with what they're working on for ranks extra adults have been handy. And I like watching the boys and how they interact and such.

I had to laugh at your dodge ball reference. Our troop plays at the end of every meeting! I wonder if other troops do this, too? It seems to be a highlight of the meeting with my guys.  I just cringe after they regale me with the events of the evening and end with their dodge ball tales.

Our troop loves this wacky game where all the boys link hands and make a circle. They place a (large) recycling bin inside the circle. Then the whole circle tries to get a boy to hit the bin. Anyone who breaks hands is out (that gets two boys out at a time) and anyone who hits the bin is out, too.
I have no idea why this game is so fun. They adore it, though!

He's definately enamoured of knot tying.. he's decided to try for a pocket knife one of the leader's has offered to the first boy to show him a set of 7 knots all tied correctly.. only one boy has tried and he missed two knots last night.. so Matthew will have a chance next week.. so he's catching me to help him make sure he's getting all his knots right. He knows 4 of them easily, 3 more he just learned and definately has one of those and mostly has the last 2. If he keeps this up he'll know all of them by next week.
It's great.. I can get a bit of work from him just by saying "as soon as you've done ________, I'll help you with your knots"

Can I ask how old your sons were when they joined scouts? My oldest is four and DH and I would really like him to join the scout troop at our parish when he gets a bit older.

Cub scouts start with Tiger scouts (at the moment) for 1st grade boys approx. 7 yrs old (a lot of them start at 6 but turn 7 within that year)
I have heard that there's a new program for Lion Cubs that would be for Kindergarten boys (5yr turning 6yr olds) What I heard is that this is still only at some locations but should be available to all councils in 2011.
I'm one that normally is perfectly willing to shift ages a bit if they're close.. but my oldest just moved from Cub Scouts to Boy Scouts and we're looking at a summer camp this summer and I really don't encourage anyone to start their boys in scouts younger than the recommended ages because then they'll be younger when they get into Boy Scouts and even if THEY might be ready, I'm not sure if most mothers would be ready to let go that much. It's hard enough with my son and his birthday is right before the cut off for schools so we have him back a year from what he could be.

I just helped my son sew on his first scout rank on his shirt. He probably sewed about half the badge and I sewed the other half (I'm in the process of teaching him.. everything that goes on his shirt now he has to sew.. I'll help him for a bit especially the ones that will stay on the shirt longer but he'll be doing them all on his own before long)
And after we got it on the shirt he put the shirt half on so the badge would lay flat and and was just grinning and smoothing it down.. seeing how it looks.. very proud of having that badge on the shirt now (he'd earned it several weeks ago and just got the actual badge a couple night ago)
