Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

As women who want to help others, we can find ourselves in a situation that is beyond our experience or expertice. Like Michaela, who shares her concerns about a friend here - Being Available, we can find ourselves dealing with big issues. How have you found local resources to help others with big issues? How have you shared these resources with others?

Love,

Here are a few ways that I have found local resources:

Talk to your parish office to see if they have a written collection of referrals and/or talk to the person responsible for community outreach.

Talk to your local librarian. Often they will have a written collection of referrals and/or know the community well and can make referrals.

Get together with mom groups and ask what resources are available in the community.

Ask your local email loop for referrals.

****

Since I've moved around quite a bit, I've learned to really ask around for personal experiences with agencies, care providers, groups, etc. If I see that a group or agency advertises, I try to find a way to get feedback from people who have used the services - sometimes groups will offer references. When this isn't possible, I try to ask questions to learn as much as possible about the philosophy and/or mission of the group.

Love,

Our public libraries have a huge information center with brochures from all kinds of groups, agencies and programs. The brochures are sometimes off to the side in a hallway, so you have to look for them, but there is so much info available.

We have a wonderful Crisis Pregnancy Center where they not only counsel against abortion but also provide classes, support groups, baby clothes, baby care ... you name it. It is a great resource. That is where I would go to get information if I knew of someone in need.

I just emailed Angie for help and resources when I wasn't sure how to support a friend in crises.

Our Crisis Pregnancy Centers are great, too. One of my friends works for the nearest Center and she has told me about their many wonderful programs. (She is a Catholic social worker.)
