Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We are thinking about moving there someday. If you are from there or live there now I'd love to hear what you think about it from a neighborhood perspective and from a Catholic homeschooling mom perspective.

We'd love to live out on a farmette somewhere w/in 20-25 miles of town, if possible.

My son likes basketball and race cars if that helps any!

Amie,

I have a very close friend (the one I always say is going to become Catholic some day!!!) who lives in Greenwood, IN, south of Indianapolis. In her area there are two Catholic churches, Our Lady of the Greenwood and Sts. Francis and Clare. OLG has a school. Sts. Francis and Clare is planning to build one. Both are very large, very nice parishes; OLG has a more traditional approach to liturgy, perpetual adoration, etc. Sts. F&C has a great music minister and a slightly...not "less traditional" or "more modern" approach to liturgy (they do everything properly, although with fewer traditional hymns) but more "Father comes down into the worship space and tells jokes to kick off the homily" approach. They put baskets of Catholic board books out at the doors for families to borrow during Mass - I really like that. OLG's worship space is (sadly) very modern and stark. Sts. F&C's is pretty modern, too, but a bit warmer. We enjoy visiting both parishes and I attend Mass in Indiana 2 or 3 times a year.

Greenwood is south of Indy, so in the "less upscale" area...definitely not low income, but not trendy. The good part of this is that there's much less traffic! They still have county fairs out there that are very "local" in feel, with the 4-H kids and their animals, etc. South of Greenwood, in the next county, Franklin is also a nice town. Don't know about parishes but I can send my "almost Catholic" friend wherever you like to pick up bulletins and stuff if you like!

We really like visiting that area. Indianapolis has really improved (more culture and family activities) in the last 15 years...my kids beg to go there and visit the Indiana State Museum, go rent pedal buggies in White River State Park, etc. It's a nice place. People are friendly. There are some inner city problems downtown (I've seen guys exchanging gang hand signals, for ex.) but once you get out of the big city there's still a traditional midwestern feel to the place.

There is a Catholic homeschooling support group at OLG, I forgot! Let me know if you want me to have my friend collect things for you...

Bloomington (about an hour away, where IU is) has a lot more cultural stuff going on, too...Scottish country dancing, Revolutionary War re-enactment...so you might want to identify the things you like, and then seek out an area that is near those activities.

Basketball and race cars will open lots of doors for your son. There's a big Scouting program as well as 4-H; I've been to the Boy Scout and Girl Scout HQ's in Indianapolis.

They don't have beaches and they do have tornadoes. They have ethnic food but not every single type (no Ethopian); they have lots of sports events (new minor league baseball stadium! ) and nice libraries in most areas...
