Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We discovered just today that we can attend the Confirmation of one of my son's friends from his last Boy Scout troop's summer camp. It's Wednesday! Like, in two days!

This means I have just one day to get or order a gift. The young man in question is in 11th grade (diocesan policy is to wait until junior year). He is in band, plays guitar and has a great sense of humor. We've not seen him in person in three years.

Please suggest gifts. I'm assuming he has all the standard-issue Catholic items for teens already, as his mom is extremely devout.

I think I could mail order an appropriate gift and it would be okay, given that we're throwing this together at the last minute.

Thanks!

P.S. Patron is St. Bonaventure.

Well it may not be about Confirmation.. but certainly sounds like perhaps a gift certificate to a music store would be welcome.. somewhere he can get strings and picks and music etc.

Since he's in the 11th grade - I suggest True Devotion to the Holy Spirit by Luis Martinez. It's my favorite recommendation for an older confirmation candidate! AMAZING book!

I like to give wooden stand-up crucifixes, something medium size to take to college and put on his desk.

When a confirmandi is older, I think of him/her leaving home, both for college and for their vocation, so I think of how they will need to build their own Catholic libary. So things like Catholic Catechism and Compendim, a good Catholic RSVCE Bible to use, Catholic Dictionary maybe...just some staples to have when they leave to enter the big wide world.

Thanks, everyone! We're giving him Scott Hahn's Catholic Bible Dictionary. He can take it to college and use it as a reference for his coursework as well as for his spiritual growth. (And I'm putting it on my own Christmas list... )

All the ideas were great, though! Next time this happens, I won't feel so overwhelmed. I really appreciate your help.

Oh, this is a fabulous book, isn't it? I got it for Christmas. It's wonderful! Of course, I'm a big fan of Catholic reference books and that one is on the list!
