Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We are taking a family vacation to this area next week and I would love to hear your suggestions for things not to miss. We were supposed to go later in May but the trip got bumped up due to dh's work schedule so I'm scrambling here to do some planning. Dh and I visited the area before we had children so it's been a while and I'd love to find some family friendly places to visit/see. We'll be spending about 4-5 days in the area. Any suggestions?? Thanks for your help!

No suggestions here, but I wanted to say have a great time! South Dakota is actually my dream vacation    I have wanted to see Mt Rushmore for years and now after reading the Little House books several times with my girls I really want to take them to DeSmet.

Stop at he Badlands, for sure! We talked a lot about how awful it would have been to travel way back when and come upon those! We stopped at the dugout house just before entering the Badlands, also, and it was very interesting. In between Rapid City and Mt. Rushmore there are many intersting attractions. We went to Bear Country, a giant maze (you were actually inside it), Mt. Rushmore Cave, and of course, Mt. Rushmore. It's all so different than when I was a kid and we lived there, but still fun. Have a great time!

It's a fantastic place, for sure! We really LOVED the Badlands. It was a highlight of our cross-continent trip. And also Custer State Park is wonderful for wildlife viewing. Lots of antelope and buffalo.
For a fun thing to do one day in Rapid city the kids enjoyed the Reptile World park.Lots of gators and such and a really neat gift shop full of geological specimens. I could have bought out the whole shop!

I second Custer State Park and Reptile World!. We camped at Custer and it was wonderful. The kids actually got used to seeing buffalo wandering around. My kids still talk about Reptile World. We're from MI so we don't see too many of those!

We have been there several times and there is a lot to see as mentioned above. Just be aware that not everything is open in early May. We found out about that the last time we went which was in May a couple of years ago. But the temps are cooler and crowds smaller so it all worked out. Have a wonderful trip!
