Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Lately, when I go to our neighborhood library, I cringe. As the number of computers increase, the number of books decrease. There are fewer and fewer bookshelves and more and more computer stations. Even the holds shelves have been moved way back to make more room for the computers.

Is this happening elsewhere, too? Are your libraries being turned into computer labs?

Our town built a newer, bigger library so I haven't noticed this. There are more computers, but I like that they are far, far away from the children's sectionl.

Our library has a small room that has about 6? computers in it.. something like that.. but that room's always been there.. the big thing is that they moved the computers that are used for looking up books and such.. out of there.. they're on top of lower shelves now instead of at desks) and put in the computer for internet etc in the room.

Yes, this is the trend of the future. I have talked to the librarins here and finding out that libraries are working to reinvent themselves to be relevant in the current culture. So they are becoming communications/media hubs because that's what people want. Paper reading is becoming obsolete to computer, audio, and video. In addition to tons of computer stations here, our dvd area looks like Blockbuster.

Yep, its happening here too The library we go to is the one I went to as a child so the transition has been especially hard for me to watch. So far though our library has been adding laptops so its mostly in the adult section which is on the other side of the library divided by the foyer/entry way.

On the up side, we are finally getting more Spanish books!!! Considering that almost 90% of us are bilingual its great to get some of those favorite books in Spanish for my kids:)

Yes, this. Our library is very new and was built with a large computer section which is always packed in the evenings.

The video section is huge, too. Most of the people in line with me are getting tons of videos. I recall one family that had the math for the limit of children's and adult movies that each parent was allowed and filled one of those shopping baskets like from the grocery store FILLED. I like movies, and I will get them from the library, but it astonishes me how little reading of books happens at the library.

I mostly use the system online catalog and request all my books and just pick them up at the desk. I thought it would be SO nice to have this brand new library within a 5 minute walk of my house, and it IS, but I don't spend nearly as much time actually at the library as I thought I would. I think, though, it will be used more when my children are readers.
