Our parish is planning to send a group of young people to World Youth Day in Madrid in the summer of 2011. We have been given permission to fundraise as much of the cost as we are able to. Since I have three of my own children who would like to go, I have a vested interest in raising money. I thought some of you ladies might have some fresh ideas. The usual cake sales and car washes are nice, but we would have to sell ALOT of cupcakes to get there! We also have the added dilemma of not being able to reinvest the $ raised into other fundraisers. I didn't think that made sense because as the saying goes, you need to spend some money to make some money. But these are the parish rules. I hate to keep bothering the same businesses for donations. I need ideas with low overhead and big profits!
Thanks in advance!

How about a "sidewalk sale"? If you can find a place to do it, all you need is a bunch of tables to line up, people willing to donate their stuff, and lots of volunteers to help. For every person willing to have their own garage sale, there are a bunch more who would love to get rid of their extra stuff but just don't have time to organize a sale. I bet you would get lots of donations of stuff, especially for such a good cause. Of course, you then need people who would organize the tables, take care of the money, and help with set up and tear down. And, of course the biggest issue is what to do with all the stuff you don't sell! But, if you have some folks who are willing, anything left behind could be packed into vans or car trunks and taken to the local Good Will.

Another idea is a soup supper. The teen group at our parish had several of these while raising money to go to World Youth Day some years ago. For a couple of weeks, after the Saturday evening Mass, they would set up in the Parish Hall. Lots of people came! There was an amount to pay and then all the soup you want. The mother's of the kids who were going, and a few other volunteers, donated the pots of soup. There were usually 3 or 4 to choose from. Someone also brought bread and occasionally there were salads. I know they made quite a bit of money doing that.

Teens could babysit for parish events, with the proceeds going to the fundraising efforts.
If you have parents willing to donate items, a silent auction can be quite profitable. (You can go to local businesses, too, of course - car washes are popular auction items here in Pollen Central.) Our Boy Scout troop does this and parents put together themed baskets to donate.

Two youth groups in our area are selling Mystic Monk and Fair Trade coffee to raise money for World Youth Day. Another group is selling Catholic t-shirts.
I think that the sidewalk/rummage sale also sounds like a great idea. I know that one of our local parishes does this annually to help support a charitable organization.

Some of the teens in a local parish asked two wonderful priests to give a talk. They charged a nominal amount, served coffee and soda afterwards, along with fruits and other desserts.
The talk was great and socializing fun. One of the teens also played the piano after the talk, as "background" music.
I know a number of them who attended the WYD in Australia, thanks to proceeds from this fundraiser and others they had.
God Bless,

A car wash chain in our area, Auto Bell, has a deal where you sell car wash tickets (good for 1 wash) and keep about half the cost of the ticket. It's been awhile since I've looked into it. I think they are about $13 a ticket and the group selling keeps $6 or $6.50.
Also some department stores like Belk do a charity days sale twice a year and you sell discount coupons for $5 each and keep the full $5. Also, if the store sells coupons they split what they sell amoung the charities selling coupons.
Resturants like Chick-Fil-A and Cici's also do some fundraising options. I think one of the pizza chains does too where you sell frozen pizza and cookie dough stuff.

Thanks for all the ideas. Keep them coming!
Kathy, we don't have Chick-Fil-A here on LI, but I know Applebees and Friendly's have a program where they give your organization a 4 hour block of time and then donate 10% of the sales for those four hours to your charity. I guess you have to make sure you get lots of people to show up during the allotted time so the restaurant gets a nice bump in sales and your organization comes away with a nice donation, too. We are working on that, as well as setting up kiddie tables at various fairs over the summer, a mega flea market at the end of the summer, open mic nights for local teen musicians, and a rent-a-teen program where teens get paid to do odd jobs.
It's going to be a very busy year!

I attended a Valentines dinner at a friends church once that the teens put on. They cooked, served and provided child care all as a fundraiser. It was $40 or $50 a couple. I'm sure they had some of the food donated to keep costs down.
One year our teens at church offered Saturday child care during the month of December so parents could get out and shop without kids. I think it was a 4 hour thing. I used it 2 of the Saturdays they offered it. My son had a blast "playing with the big guys."
Our ladies group is raising funds for cancer support right now and they are selling the auto bell tickets and holding a Pampered Chef sale. The consultant will donate her profits (or part of I don't know how much).
We have a local company in town that does school fundraisers and they provide coupon books (small peeler coupons) for groups to sell. It would depend on what is available there. It may be that LI would only have the really big Entertainment type books. We are a much smaller area so a smaller book works here.
Now you have me thinking fondly of Friendly's and a Fish Jig sandwich with a Fribble. On man, I need to get up there to visit family and eat all the good stuff I can't get here! I think I miss the bakeries most of all.

I love the Christmas shopping babysitting idea! We could even have the teens help the little ones make Christmas gifts for their parents during that time!
I am going to bring it up at our meeting tonight!
Thanks... and I'll be thinking of you next time I order a chocolate Fribble... Friendly's is dangerously close to my house.. less than 1/2 mile!
