Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Has anyone spent some or part of their family vacation doing mission work (within US)or some volunteer type activity? We are looking to summer and dh brought that up as something he would like to do. It is challenging though to find activities in which everyone (or most everyone) in the family can participate. Any ideas?

we have the missionaries of charity (mother teresa's order) right here in our town and I know they really enjoy and encourage families to come and help prepare/serve meals. They also run Catholic vacation Bible Schools that my family has helped with in the summer. I've peeled many a potato with a baby in a sling!
you may want to see where in the US they are, and contact them.

well this saturday we're helping out as a family at kids for hunger, packing up food for haiti...

we've found many opportunities to volunteer as a family by networking. this saturday was organized by a fellow homeschooling mom. in past we've been able to serve at IHN through the scouts, through a faith group we're in and through our Little Flowers group. when we see signs looking for volunteers we call and ask if they take families. that's how dh and ds found a volunteer opportunity at Matthew 25 ministries. our local soup kitchen also takes families as volunteers. one of the groups at church regularly asks for people to volunteer and specifies that "families are welcome". usually they organize groups to visit nursing homes or to serve at dinners for seniors, etc.

i've tried looking at volunteer websites in the past and found a couple of opportunities but the best ones are usually the ones we found out through word of mouth so it pays to ask around.

This organization often has announcements on our local Christian radio station. It is an inter-faith organization that organizes groups to glean from various fields to collect food for the poor. This is an activity that I would like for my family to try.

Missionaries of the Poor in Monroe, NC, is getting ready to offer family mission opportunities--just saw the announcement today on the CLAA forum. I am not local to the area, so there may be some opportunities now; they MOPs have been in the area a few years and feed the hungry, provide home visits and more.

I know there are Missionaries of Charity in Spokane, WA. Don't know if that's where LisaR is. ???

Thanks for the ideas. I am still trying to figure out the best environment to do this as a family. Gleaning might work as the baby could be in a backpack and the toddlers could help a bit--or at least play in the dirt:) Our plan is to find somewhere we can volunteer for part of vacation week rather than spend a few days doing some more traditional vacationing--hiking/swimming/ect with the kids.
