Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My dd wants a dog. Or a ferret. Or...

You get the idea. Although I think we're far away from getting a dog, she is creating lists of dog names. Most of them are elaborate, multi-syllabic and involve food items. (E.g. "Chocolate Shake")

How does your family choose pet names? Our cats came pre-named, so we haven't done this in a long time. All I know is, I don't want to call my dog and have someone think I've missed the fast food ordering speaker...

well long names like that tend to be shortened anyway.. you'd probably find you're calling "Chocolate Shake" just Chocolate.. or even.. Choco.

Now I like people names for animals too.. we've had a dog named Lucy for instance.. but after yelling for Lucy out the door.. I decided that it's much better to yell for odd things like Boots or Chocolate Shake than for people to think I've lost a child.

How about a literary character? We once adopted a stray dog who, once we had him groomed and de-flead (is that a word?) turned out to be a real diamond in the rough. We named him Oliver, as in Twist. It really suited him.

We always go for literary characters if they don't come prenamed. We particularly like adding a Mr. or Ms. in front. It's just charming, I think.

We go with the ethnic names that suit Scottish terriers, which is the only kind of dog we've had. Although I think giving them people names is fun - I've always wanted to yell at a cat, "Hey, Dave, get off the table!" Of course, I couldn't really give the cat the same name as my husband ....

Peace,
Nancy

We always wait until we've had the animal a little while so we can pick a name that suits his/her personality.

Jack, Lady, Max, Precious, Baby, Callie (for a calico cat), Princess, Duchess...

don't go there . Every other animal in America is named Jack, Lady or Princess, I'm convinced. (And I know everyone reading this probably has a pet with one of these names... I am not meaning to offend, it's just how things are).

One of my all time favorites was a Boston terrier named Chief.
Another favorite I treated was named Jellybean.

I agree with Theresa- give it time and see what happens. One of my favorite cat names was Fiddle... a cat who liked to get in her owner's violin case.

i think "chocolate shake" is adorable.

we do not do people names. i always thought that was very odd. DH did too. so....no people names.

then....well, some has to do with personality of the new pet, etc.

I like people names that I wouldn't name my child because they would have to live with it but wish I could.

Mel (short for Melchior Zamboni H----)--originally, it came from the dog in the show "Jack's Big Music Show"--realllly cute. Then we started calling him "Melzy boy"...Mel Z...you see where it went from there. DH and I actually came up with the Melchior Zamboni part. lol.

Of course, we're the same people who joked about naming our dc things like Peter Linus Augustine Nestor Theophilus Thaddeus Hilary Eustace (PLANT THE H-----). And Winifred Antoinette Therese Eulalia Rosamund Tatiana Hortense Evangeline (WATER THE H-----).

If you knew/know our last name, welll...

Let's just say "ROSE" is not a name we will ever use. Lily is actually pretty close to "a no go", if it weren't for the fact that lilies are small flowers...

ANYWAY! LOL

Our other dogs? Have been named Sheba (currently--our Great Pyr who came named), Theophilus John (RIP), Carmen, and Electra (RIP).

We've had cats named Buddy and Edison.

If we ever have another cat, *if* they get a name (cause they will be barn cats), they will be basic cat names. Blackie. Snowball. Etc.

And dogs? One of these days..when the dc are grown and gone, and chances are, I'm a widow (due to age differences, etc), I plan on getting a couple of corgis to keep me company. Names? Winifred (Winnie) and Chester (Ches). Yep. I'll be the crazy old trad Catholic lady in the black dress, and black veil, at each and every Mass. Clean, but with the occasional corgi hair floating off of me. And until I can't drive, I'll be there, daily.    Something I cannot do now (one car, 20 miles each way from town, ykwim). Me, my corgis, and the flowers I fully intend to plant between now and whenever...lol.

So, does that tome make any sense?

LOL

Rachel

It sure does. If I ever grow up I want to be a Church Lady...our pastor is very good about reminding us of how much good the Church Ladies do - praying after daily Mass, helping with altar decor and church cleaning, praying at home, more praying...my dear grandma was a Church Lady (Altar Society, Catholic Daughters, the whole thing) and really enjoyed that part of her life as a widow. It gave her true purpose that was independent of her income, marital status or anything else.

I'll have cats, though - at the rate things are going, walking won't be high on my Fun Things to Do list. (Multiple podiatry appointments are in my immediate future, sigh.)

Side note: When I was a UCLA student, the professor who always taught Econ 2 (except for the ONE quarter I took it, another story...) was famous for his dog, Winnie.

Side note #2: One of our cats is actually named Princess...but we didn't name her. Her foster mommy did, because Miss Princess Pea (her full name) loves to sleep on the softest object in the house. In winter it is our Korean blanket (when she's not hunkered directly over a heater vent - I am Scrooge Mom). In summer it's the upstairs plushy carpet in full sun. Truly sybaritic!

we had a dog when i was growing up. his name was Prince.

then my dad's dad passed away, and we inherited his dog. that dogs name was Duke.

and then, my daddy got me a ferret (oh, how i loved that ferret!!!) she was already named (she wasn't a baby.) her name was Princess.

So - by total fluke and coincidence - we had Prince, Princess, and Duke.

Usually we tend to just settle that whatever is Thw Name that suits.

Rosie was the sweetest great dane ever.
Jugernaut is the hermit crab who always insists on a shell about three times too big for him.
Shyguy is a shy hermit crab.
Hermione the Cat
Chip the dog was named by dh. My first and most beloved dog was called Mulligan. Dh decided to keep the golfing term tradition when he gifted us with the puppy. (I didn't even know either of those were golfing terms and regularly forget it.)
We just named our new black mini Rex rabbit Edmound. If he'd been a girl we were going to go with Lucy from Narnia.

We named our cat Hobbes after Calvin and Hobbes because he is definitely a "Homicidal Psycho Jungle Cat."

I don't think there is a rhyme or reason for what we have named our pets.

Growing up, my daschund was "Susie." My cats were "Charcoal" and "Chessie."

Our dog, who just turned 13 and acts every bit like a difficult old man , is a black lab mix named "Charles." And don't ever call him "Charlie!"    My 19yo ds who named him was adament that it was not to be done!

Our "neighbor" dogs are Lucy, Sophie, Skye and Phoebe. Yes, Charles has a small harem, but he is afraid of all of them.

God Bless,

My father in law is from Lithuania and he gets very upset when someone names a pet after a saint. I get the impression that this is something not just from his parents but a common sentiment in Lithuania back in the day (and perhaps now?). My bil had a dog that was named Joseph and my fil was so disapproving that the dog got a name change. It isn't something that I ever thought about (mostly because we are not pet people since I am allergic to dogs and cats) but I do like the idea of reserving saint names for people.

I didn't think about that, 13 years back, but I have since then. Unfortunately, by that time, the dog's name was set.
