Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

This is probably a state by state thing...but when can teens usually get a summer job? When do your usually want to?

We have friends whose kids hang around every summer even as seniors. But mine already is itching this summer, and she will only be 15 at the beginning of June. We have somewhere safe (meaning we know it inside and out), her taekwondo studio, where she would like work (camp counselor).

But I was just curious what has been others' teen job experiences.

My oldest, 16, has only done babysitting and volunteer work (ie Vacation Bible School at our old parish). This year she's going to work for several weeks as an au pair/mother's help for my cousin, his wife, and their two tiny children in the D.C. area.

I really don't know about "official" jobs, though. Most of our friends' kids who've had jobs have gotten them via friends -- the son of one friend has worked for a local mechanic, for example, and in a print shop. But these were through people the family knew, and were undertaken as apprenticeships. Any remuneration was probably kind of under the table. I think the son was younger than 16 when they started, but I'm not sure.

Don't know if that helps or not! My personal feeling is that I'd love for my 16-year-old to have a "real" summer job, both for the experience and the money, but she's probably going to be doing some summer-school work after she finishes her au-pair stint.

I think the tae kwon do camp thing sounds like a lot of fun.

I would think it's okay to ask now if summer work will be available. Where I live, swimming pools start hiring lifeguards for the summer by early March, and summer camp registration is underway, so hiring can't be far behind.

My son mowed lawns last summer (and will again); we're hoping to finalize our summer schedule this month so we'll know if he will be home long enough to get a scheduled summer job as well.
