so i'm reading HOme Comforts and aired out my bed today. i really would like my bedroom to look like an oasis instead of just a place where we cosleep. of course that means i need to get better about hanging my clothes instead of tossing them on the cedar chest! What makes a bedroom looks lovely? I'd also like to get a mattress pad - do you have any suggestions on what kind is best?

Something that you can fit in your washer and dryer would be nice. If it needs to air dry, having a second one would be helpful if your washer is too small so you could make the bed. Not a problem in warmer weather, but dreary winters put a kibosh on reliable line drying.

It helped me to think about what would make me comfortable in my "den of nakedness" (is that what she called it?). If the room was too bare, I wouldn't feel comfortable, if it were too full, I wouldn't be able to relax. I talked some with my husband to make sure he and I were on the same sheet of music.
In the end I made sure that there were a mix of energy(red and yellow) and restful(blue and green) colors for linens. Something for bare feet so as to not have a shock to the system when we get out of bed, and some sconces with vanilla scented candles for warmth. Sheers over the windows that let the light in but don't let the neighbors see us. Decluttering is an ongoing battle.... 
Most things that made the room were collected from other areas of the house where they didn't quite fit so there was very little monetary investment.

I can't help with the oasis part, since our bedroom is just about wall-to-wall beds, but as far as a mattress pad goes, we have a waterproof mattress pad from Lands' End on our bed (actually, on all the beds). We also co-sleep, and it has saved our mattress from ruin many a time. It is impossible to tell that it is waterproof when sleeping on it, too--no crinkly noises at all. I can wash and dry our king-size one with no problem in our oversize Maytag.

I ordered a waterproof mattress pad for LE. I dusted, decluttered, moved some furniture around and cleaned the carpet. It looks so much,. . fresher! rachel, your color scheme is really interesting - i have tan (yellow) walls, tomato red curtains, a quilt block comforter with mostly blue, and if i ever finish my wall quilt, i'll have the green! here i'm doing it right and i haven't a clue about decorating.

Me either! 
We have a quilt with large ecru blocks and lots of different colored blocks for most of the year, and then a heavy comforter with red, yellow, blue, green, stripes in a variety of widths. Over the bed are the black iron sconces and a deep red and dark blue fabric thing I got in Israel in college. On the floor is a mostly tan (small) Afghani rug that was a gift for my birthday when Bill was gone.
We rent so the carpet is ecru and the walls are white with a really ugly golfer border and there are miniblinds on the windows. The part of the room that we designed and like is portable so we can take it with us wherever we go. Someday, we'll own a house and I'll paint and pick carpet and curtains.....for now I'd settle for a nightstand!
