I'm filling up our netflix queue and my daughter and I would like to watch Pride and Prejudice. I have the new version in our queue, but Ab is saying that 'the old one is supposed to be better' - there are a few old ones though... any suggestions?

The A&E with Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle is definitely my favorite (about five hours long, I think). The newest one is beautiful and, really, fine. An excellent movie. It's just not as faithful to the book as the A&E.

The A&E version...definitely!
Who wouldn't want to spend 5 hours with Darcy and Elizabeth!

Not even close- get the Jennifer Ehle one. Keira Knightly's pretty, but can't act.

Definitely the A&E version... really brings the whole book to life in a way that others just don't seem to manage.

A&E here too, for sure!
I like the new one well enough (not all that faithful to the book, but still a fun movie in its own right), but my husband absolutely refuses to watch it! He is a bit of a purist.

Well, I like the OLD one with Greer Garson and Laurence Olivier, the 1940 version.
We do love the A&E version as well. Kiera Knightly's version is horrible. I guess if you didn't know the story and had no expectations it may have been enjoyable. To us, it was not.

A&E!!! Cannot get on board with Matthew Macfadyen (perhaps if I were 17... NAH.). His Darcy was way too whiny and wimpy for me. I'll keep my thoughts about Keira Knightley's acting to myself.

Yes, most of those I know who preferred the new version did not read the book prior to watching, which to me is very sad.

Ack!! I feel quite stupid for saying I love the new version...more to do with creating moods and feelings in scenes.
I enjoyed A & E, I LOVED the black and white with Greer Garson.

I agree with you that the landscapes in the new version are really breathtaking, Anne, and I liked seeing the grittier side of the settings too--for example, I really enjoy the "tour" of the home in the opening of the new version.

Love the A & E version best with Colin Firth, but I also enjoyed the old 1980 BBC version with David Rintoul. I love old BBC movies.
The music for the A & E one is just beautiful, I sometimes listen to it while I clean house.music There are samples to listen to, the first is my favorite!

Don't feel stupid! It was inconsiderate of me to make such a blanket statement. There is a lot of beauty in the movie. I just didn't feel that the characters fit with *my* idea of them. I am sorry.

Yes, that's what I mean! I love the opening scene, Elizabeth walking to the house and then through the house, the beautiful music..
The scene in the barnyard and Elizabeth on the swing..there are many mood provoking scenes like that and of course the end.
I would say that there is too much of a modern touch to attitudes that I don't like..it's not perfect but as a movie, I like it.
Had to edit: I like when Elizabeth goes off with her aunt and uncle, and she's obviously in the carriage with her eyes closed facing the sun, they've filmed it as though they are behind her eyelids, just very creative with stirring feelings.

No it's ok Molly, I think you've said it right there ~ there's beauty in the movie and for some reason I'm particularly moved by what beauty there is and so it does not over balance for me the poorer parts, but I think it is definately fair to say that there are some disappointing things in some characters and of course the dialogue cannot be as rich and true the way a 5 hour movie can be.

I liked the new one best!
I did like the A&E one and I am a Colin Firth fan, but as a movie I definitely enjoyed the new one more. And yes, I have read the book.

I really liked the A&E one, but love the new one (and I got dh hooked on it ). For Christmas, dh got me both the dvd and the cd of the music. I am in P and P heaven! And, get this, dh just finished *reading* P and P for himself!
I think it would be great fun to get in queue for both/all three versions (I need to find a library with the "old" one!)! Just make sure to be ready for a break in time for "Emma." I think Paula's thread had mentioned it is Jan. 24th?
God Bless,

whoops, sorry, gals, anne, etc. i didn't mean to offend anyone! there ARE things to love in the new one, but if i HAD to choose i'd pick the a&e. for one thing, the actors they picked for the new one more closely matched the book's characters in age, whereas jennifer ehle was 25 i think when she played that and colin was in his 30s?
