Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

It's already begun snowing here in Manassas, VA. Our forecast right now:

Winter Storm Warning:

* ACCUMULATIONS...HEAVY SNOW WITH ACCUMULATIONS OF 1 TO 2 FEET THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT.

* TIMING...SNOW WILL CONTINUE THROUGH LATE SATURDAY NIGHT. SNOW WILL BE HEAVIEST FROM 5 AM TO 5 PM SATURDAY.

Thankfully I've completed all my errands for Christmas. "This could be the biggest DC snowstorm in December on record, as the highest snowfall in recorded history in DC is 11.5" on December 17th, 1932." (see WTOP.

That's why I have Terra Cotta Warriors tix for tomorrow. Please pray that the museum shuts down so we can reschedule instead of driving into the District or losing our ticket money by not showing up. Dd has to altar serve Sunday, another worry. Dh and ds put the snow tires on our van tonight, just in time!

The snow started here about 20 minutes ago and it's sticking already.

My Christmas errands are not finished but the main boxes have already been sent to family, and we won't go hungry...I already bought the Christmas hams...we've stashed a grill on the porch...the rest will abide, as they say.

Stay safe, everyone!

P.S. I am going on record as a snow-hater...I am from L.A. and prefer to drive to my snow, ski on it and drive home. (Snow Snob, that's me!) Events like this really unnerve me.

Yeah ... well, I'm not happy with it!

2hrs to get home from a den meeting which we shouldn't have had (St. Patrick's is AT MOST 20 minutes from our house). Rick had to come get me as I got the van stuck on a hill 2 blocks from home!

Catie's supposed to come in tomorrow ... 2:00pm at National but we're worried about I95 closing or her flight being canceled and her stranded in Ft. Myers, FL.

Otherwise ... yes, it's lovely!

Oh, and I forgot to add that if school is closed Monday, Rick would have to go in Tuesday ....

Otherwise ... yes, it's lovely!

(Did I mention I don't like to drive in snow?)

How I wish I was already at our VA house! We had planned to drive down on Sunday after Mass, but who knows if that will be possible at this point? I'm hoping the roads will be clear enough by then. The worst part is that we have NO snow gear up here in Delaware...all our boots, snow mittens (we have knit gloves here, but nothing waterproof), and snow pants are in Virginia. So we're stuck inside until we can brave the roads and get out to western VA!!

It sure is beautiful, though! And I just received today the book "Snow" by Cynthia Rylant and a few other snow books I had ordered for January. Talk about serendipitous! Looks like the snow unit will start a little early .

Erin... ...I have to agree ~ and boy oh boy...maybe it is the 7x7 years like in the Big Winter? (Remember when the indian came into town and told the settlers..) I've always wondered if you have seen that pattern in past 100 years...

We just got home from dd's band concert - a lot of snow already and sooo cold!! It looks so incredibly pretty - the children are so looking forward to playing tomorrow.

I went out and ran errands all morning - it was a nightmare - crowds and crowds - but I can actually avoid the grocery store until after Christmas (and I am hosting) - the only thing is I am supposed to take meals to two sick friends and I promised lasagne - but forgot the lasagna noodles - will have to improvise.

I am almost looking forward to being snowed in - great way to get all the Christmas cleaning done!!

I join Nancy in being an official "snow disliker" - I get totally unnerved and do not like to drive in it - and feel a little claustrophobic. Now for my hot ovaltine and hot water bottle... and to crank up the heat...

Dd says it's the "mild El Nino" (sorry, the "n" should have a tilde) that is causing our extreme snowfall.

We are typically faced with 2-4 inch snowfalls. This is extreme, a once in 10 or 20 years event. (I have a story about how my dh rescued the Swedish ambassador's wife in a snowfall like this, long ago in I think 1987...)

This does not mean I want to be out in it...I'm just sayin'!

Yes, 1987, right around the March for Life, right? My family moved here from Louisiana (and before that Texas) that year. That was baptism by blizzard! We didn't venture out until quite a while.

Yup.

She abandoned her Volvo somewhere in Alexandria and my dh helped her walk to a pay phone in a sheltered place, so she could tell her husband where she was.

I always wondered what happened to her car...

I, of course, was in SoCal where I belonged. On the bad side, so was DC mayor Marion Barry...for the Super Bowl. This did not play well for him....

It sounds a lot like the big storm in Feb. '03. Nancy, were you in W VA then? That storm shut everything down for a week!

I am happy for you all! But being from the lake effect band snow region of NY--we often wake up to 1 to 1 1/2 feet of snow on the ground--without even being warned about it.

The kids have been watching the news and think it really isn't fair that we can get 2 feet of snow overnight and then school is delayed an hour, the plows clear the roads as well as they can, and then it is business as usually---of course, we just look out the window and enjoy!

I hope you all enjoy your snowy adventure and everyone gets where they need to be, everyone's children get home safely and everyone has FUN!!!

I was in Sunny Italy in 2003. And boy, was I glad to be away from snow!

I 've stayed up too late tonight mixing up batches of cookie dough so we can have fun being snowed in on Long Island this weekend. I wish it was a different day, though. My husband and my six children are all participating in one way or another in our parish Advent Musical. It is in memory of Ryan Barrett, and we will all be so disappointed if the show can't go on!
Say a prayer that all the hard work and love that went into this production can be witnessed by our community!
