Another "unique" question for today! My 10dd is experiencing painful stomach cramping for the second time in a week. She's tall and really slim and for the past year I've been making homemade smoothies with protein and flax oil (for her excema), for a midmorning snack. We noticed that it has happened after she has had the smoothie, but we don't know if this is the cause.

The ingredients for the first smoothie on Mon. that affected her were: rice milk, rice protein, flax oil, frozen bananas and Ovaltine.

Today I used rice milk, whey protein, flax oil (from a new bottle), frozen bananas, and frozen mango pulp. About a half hour after drinking it, she complains of cramping and just curls up in a ball.

She can jump up and down which rules out appendicitis. She ends up using the bathroom several times with slightly loose stools (sorry to be so frank!), and eventually it goes away after she eats a little for lunch.

I don't know what to think! It's not like she's never had our smoothies before. I gave her some papaya tablets, but so far it has not helped. She's a little on the dramatic side, but this time you can see that she doesn't feel good. Any thoughts?

Suggestions and prayers are greatly appreciated.

Well, maybe some of you prayed today, I know I did, but dd is doing better. It is really perplexing. I don't know what is causing this. She turns pale and gets the chills and holds a pillow against her belly, it hurts so bad.   Then she eats a little lunch and goes to the bathroom alot and it's over.

If you happen to get any insights, pass them on! I have a feeling this may happen again. Thank you much!

Ana,

Has she ever had anything like this with dairy products? I have lactose intolerance which can have cramping, but some friends of mine have similar symptoms like you describe...enough to miss school, just from milk products. Whey is a milk protein, so it might be causing the problem. Just a stab in the dark!

Oh, sorry, I noticed that the first morning there was no dairy. Flax cramps me up terribly...could she be sensitive to it?

Flax seed can be a laxative.

I bet that the oil is somehow the cause. Some of those can really be violent and miserable. Hope this clears up.

I am wondering about the flax oil too. I've given it to her in the smoothies for a while now, but I think that it's either that or the bananas. I don't think rice milk does anything.

Another thought was maybe the protein itself (no matter the source)? Maybe too much? Thanks for helping me decipher this.

To avoid these minor side effects, take EFA supplements with meals, start with lower doses and increase gradually, and/or divide the daily dose into smaller portions. Dividing the dose helps absorption and minimizes side effects.
